a bit over exaggerated don't you think?

i think it is a good story but is a bit over exaggerated especially joes mother being killed with a baseball ball, and various other things in the movie.

Yes, I agreed. When the bus swerved and tumbled into the river, I thought they exaggerated how Simon saves the children. It seems too super-hero-ish and not modest enough.

A wee bit pretentious wasnt it, to show how good and noble dear Simon can be.

Thank goodness a schoolbus of German children never wrecked during one of Hitler's speeches, or else he might have ended up as a heroic figure as well.

The Outsiders with Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Maachio, C. Thomas Howell and whoever else, would do the same thing with a burning schoolhouse while the hooligans that church people disapprove of, were fleeing from the police.

Check out Peewee's Big Adventure. He does it too, when he is stealing back his bike, he must stop and rescue animals from a burning pet store.

I thought so about that part it made me cry. I wouldn't think that Simon could hit hard enough to knock some one dead or even knocked out probabally just a bump on the head but it did add the drama and helped the story.

why do you think that? someone could easily be killed by a baseball. I guess they wanted to stay relatively faithful to the book, even though they changed the name.

I think it was exaggerated but came out ok in the end since there's only so much time to be able to get all the important stuff in. Simon rescuing the kids was weird, I think since they couldn't even hear Joe telling them to calm down but they Simon? Whaaat?

Actually LukeWallace18, the baseball thing isnt exaggerated.

I'm a med student & I also had a head injury. As you know the brain is made up of different lobes and has sections. Any head trauma can jolt the brain. That baseball is hard & could be flying over 50MPH & crashing into a skull can kill somebody. Skull depression is a major injury & I dont think they had the means to help people with massive head trauma in the 60s.

I hope I helped

Why do you think helments are for? To protect you from getting hit in the head possibly getting serious injury and/or death. It doesnt take much of a blow to the right spot to drop you instantly where you stand. It can, and has happened.

Maybe some one could die from such an injury but the way it was filmed made it seem so outrageous. First of all, the kid is a midget. Is it possible that someone of the strength and stature could hit a ball hard enough to be fatal? And if I recall, it is filmed in slow motion so we really can't determine how fast the ball was actually going. Maybe if the ball was hit by a fairly strong person, and a certain speed and angle and hit someone in a certain part of their head, yes, they would die. But likely in this case? No, I don't think so.
Second, shouldn't there be some sort of laceration or bruise to her head? Because I didn't see any. She looked the same as before. I also don't think that in that case anyone would act the way they did. No one would give a heads up? She wouldn't notice a ball flying at her head? And when she got struck everyone acted in a calm quirky manner and then they all gather around and are just like...she's dead. No one would go call an ambulance? No one would do anything? And is it really likely that she would die that sudden?

I don't think anything was over exaggerated, it shows that even though you're little you can still take charge and help people. And there are cases that people are killed with baseballs...and if you didn't notice, it hit her in the temple and that's a fatal blow. But I loved this movie...I cried like 3 times during it.

"Actually, I think it's overexaggerated how much some people disliked him--like his own father!"

Actually, Hatred like that towards someone who's different is very common. Don't most people have that one person you wanna give the evil eye because you don't like the way they are? Well Simon was that one person for most of the town, because he was more different than most.

Can't we all just get along?
