The Bus

When Simon looked out the back of the bus and saw the raging water, did he think that he would not be able to make it? That since he was so small there was no way he wouldn't be sucked away by the current? So instead he moved to the front of the bus and played the hero role, or accepted his place as "God's instrument".

I'm not saying he knew he was going to die, but maybe he knew he couldn't get out the back of the bus? So he waited for another opportunity (like getting out the side window). Maybe his heroic act was originally spurred on by fear?

In the book he has a premonition of his death, but knows that he dies a hero. He even knows the specific date.
