As an atheist; will this movie just piss me off?

I am an atheist and i am sick of god being brought into everything. I find it happens a lot more in American cinema and TV and it annoys the *beep* outta. Is the idea of god being used as a plot/character devise or does this movie actually take the idea of god seriously? I'd like to know before i sit down to watch it and find i have wasted a couple of hours when i could've watched something intelligent.

Cheers

everything? Obviously don't watch many movies or TV, where atheism and secular beliefs reign supreme. I can barely name faith related films on one hand.

And Heaven forbid the God you claim to not believe in get mentioned even once. You know what I am sick of? Belligerent God-haters obsessing over the God they vehemently insist isn't real and insulting movies that portray Him in a positive way or people who do believe. They come out to play online where they feel braver about saying hateful things, and whip out the verbal torch and pitchfork, ready to attack anything God-related. Even if they say "Praise the Lord" are you going to stop watching and forever condemn it because your poor, sensitive little ears can't stand to hear it? Dang, it's only a movie. I'm sorry if this is harsh and too long but it's tiring to see 100 posts like this on imdb.

and find i have wasted a couple of hours when i could've watched something intelligent.

Contradiction.

When you come back and ask a little more respectfully I'd be glad to answer you.

That was worded perfectly, peppermint! Bravo!

LOL. Yes. Yes it is.

Thank You , ThAnK YoU, THANK YOU, for telling it like it is. You have my support.
What pisses ME off is that God is being REMOVED from EVERYTHING by arrogant self centered people like the OP. Freedom of religion is under attack in this and many countries and I'm sick of it. The real problem is that people who DO hold particular beliefs, are being regarded as stupid. (Note the wording; "watch something intelligent"; in reference to watching something that does not mention God or some religious belief.
In contrast, I dont tell other people they are stupid, simply because their beliefs dont match mine. They may BE stupid, but it is usually other things that make that determination.
It seems apparent that these people have no respect for our constitution or rights to have religious beliefs and to practice them. And I'M NOT the guy who is knocking on anyones door telling them what to believe or that they are going to hell if they dont believe a certain way.
Freedom is a 2 way street.
Bigotry and hatred are unfortunately still alive and well.

I think the movie will piss YOU off. But in this movie, God or the idea of God, gives the poor little unfortunate boy, Simon Birch..hope. If that's too hard for you to stomach..go watch The Expendables or something. No God there, just lots of fancy explosions..woooh!

In some cultures what I do is considered normal.

I felt the need to back you up. There are a lot of films out there that are supposed to lift you up spiritually, but if you watch it without a religious mindset, all you see is how unquestioning faith screws everything up. But the people still have their faith in the lord, and smile up at the sky for the camera, even though he gave someone cancer or a train wreck or a war...whatever the movie theme is. In this case it's a debilitating physical deformity. Thanks, god! I'm sure it's all for the best.

But to answer your question: It's a device. A McGuffin to move things along.

I'm an atheist too. The movie is just bad though, god or not. You'll find even less in it without a belief in god. But I guess you might relate to the bond of friendship that's in it, but that's probably it.

Humans cause their own demise. Allowing large corporations to get away with the filth they leave behind. The air we breathe in is populated, brought on by greedy corporations.
Cancer? have you seen what the government is giving permission to do to the animals that humans eat. Because the world is over populated.
The list could go on, people blame God for everything that goes wrong in their lives but no one wants to take ownership for what we do wrong as humans.

This touching little movie about a time long gone, with spirituality at its center probably will offend you. Sorry if you can't appreciate something like this. The fact that you even bothered to post on it is proof. Next time you blink yourself into existence, maybe you can make a movie you'll like better.

reply

I agree with the OP. and the others who are true to themselves. gawd was used as a plot device.

thanks for posting OP.. and no, atheist don't "blink" themselves into existence. We're born just like everyone else. no need for sarcasm.

LOL I don't believe in organized religion but I love people who bash it. They're usually self absorbed waste of life, fat and gross. Thats just my observation. But like Linda Blair says "your mothers down here, sucking c*cks In hell" LOL I'm paraphrasing of course.

I know this is an old post but I wanted to weigh in. I'm an atheist but I don't watch movies/TV shows or read books that have atheists in them. I am not offended by others' religion just as I'd hope they aren't offended by my disbelief.

If you don't watch movies just because they have religious plots or even undertones, you're missing out.

I don't believe in vampires, werewolves or faeries but I watch True Blood. Same thing.

This is a cute movie about a little boy with a big heart, his best friend and how short life can be.

If you're disposed to be pissed off, you will be. And is your time worth any more than anyone else's?

i havent seen it yet, but i think that not watching a movie because God is mentioned or part of it is dumb, i mean would you stop watching Star Wars? cuz in that movie you could say "the force" is kind of like God, so I guess atheists should avoid SW as well, and if you dont believe it Lucas himself said in an interviewed that the force represents god in the film so whatever.

and before i get bashed, you first gotta define God, cuz personally, i dont believe in the christian God, the one that punishes his creatures and shoves fear down our throats until we accept that his only son died for a little while to save us, yeah that god is ridiculous because one of his main "policies" or something is forgive thy neighbor but he still hasn't forgiven Adam and Eve for the apple incident, what a scumbag.
