When he met Rebecca, I mean. Was that why she kept his paternity a secret?

In the book he even went as far as threatening to reveling himself as John's (Joe's) father to keep her from getting married to Dan (Ben) for 3 years.

I don't think he was. His daughters appear a bit younger than Joe.
