The Dark Knight Rises similarities anyone?

Not sure if I was the only one, but after watching The Dark Knight Rises I couldn't help but notice certain strong thematic and aesthetic similarities that are / were present in Patlabor 2.

The scenes in TDKR when Bane detonates the explosives in and around Gotham City, destroying vital infrastructure (bridges, roads etc.), reminded me of the scene in Patlabor 2 when the chopper starts flying around Tokyo taking out vital infrastructure. What's more, like Patlabor 2, TDKR is set in winter / fall creating a very similar feel and look. TDKR even shared similar cinematography with those scenes in Patlabor 2!

Add to that Tsuge Yukikito - the terrorists' leader - and Bane both used the same techniques to bring their respected cities to their knees (so to speak). Obviously their reasons, motivations, objectives and ultimate 'end-games' differed but you get my drift.

Thoughts?

I honestly wonder if Nolan has seen this, I mean it's not an impossibility, right?

I watched it today for the first time in years and I thought the same exact thing. Like you said Bane has a completely different set of motivations but other than that the similarities are pretty uncanny. Once it starts snowing it seems like the visual reference almost has to be intentional.

It even shares the same progression on the hero's side of the story too. The members of SV2 have pretty much retired and moved on (like Batman), a disaster strikes that seemingly cripples the SV2 for good (Batman gets his back broken, SV2 has all of their labors shot up and their home base destroyed) and then just like how Batman returns from defeat the old team gets back together and saves the day one last time.

It's impossible to know for sure but Mamoru Oshii's films have had a lot of influence on western cinema, such as Ghost in the Shell's influence on The Matrix. It's not out of the realm of possibility.

if not Nolan, then maybe David S Goyer has seen it? he's the actual scriptwriter, right?

Well i know for a fact that Nolan is an Anime Fan, he stated satoshi kon's Paprika was a huge influence in writing inception. So there is no doubt in my mind that he saw Patlabor 2 before making TDKR.
