Loved it, but the romance was kind of odd

SPOILER ALERT

How could Beth have had one nugget of feelings for Sheriff? I would think she would have had nothing but contempt for this selfish bastard. I mean, wouldn't we all like to think we'd have gone back?

Of course, there's always the possibility she did everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, to save her brother (who we didn't know was her brother at the time of the romance budding). Perhaps that was her motive in the beginning (while still holding Sheriff in contempt for his self-centered ways), and then ultimately fell in love with him when he returned.

I thought the romance felt natural. I got the feeling very early on that there was chemistry between them. I think her attraction to him was always genuine. His selfish side was obvious but the more she got to know him she realized he wasn't a bad person. Just, not perfect. He was quite clearly conflicted which in itself is less than selfish. I think she saw that.

I think we'd all LIKE to think we'd go back but it's just too easy to say without actually being faced with it. It's a great premise.

Back off! ... Way off!

Yes, I totally agree. The romance was one of the several aspects of the movie that seemed contrived and not true-to-life. No matter how much chemistry, no matter how magnetic the Sheriff character was to Beth, the seriousness of her mission would seem to overshadow any notions of frolicking in the sheets (or in the tub) with him.
The other thing I thought was too contrived was the judge changing the sentence (in flagrant opposition to the law as it was explained to us) because he was enraged about a newspaper story.
I don't see it.
But other than these 2 quibbles with the film's departure from reality, I loved the movie.

Very odd but I think she kind of knew the outcome, so the one that offered more care or heart she felt almost was (maybe like) her brother. Or something like that.

reply

Yeah, the romance was the only part of the movie I didn't like.

in answer to the would you go back question:

To a Maylasian prison...hell no! I'll miss you, but you're on your own, I'm comfy at home. sorry you got caught.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog

reply

They didn't plan the attraction. They did choose to act on it.
The serious emotional issue helped bring them together. He ended up being there for her brother.

If he had left then she should have only then sought him, and Tony, out for some vigilante justice.

reply

Yeah the romance was very much out of place.

The romance was VERY odd. It felt stiff (insert joke of your choice here) and unnatural.
