Could you explain the occurrences that led to Sheriff dying and Lewis being (assumed) freed?

Well after Lewis is sentenced to death, Sheriff goes a bit mad and by a bit I mean a lot. He punches a mirror and cuts himself with the glass, then I think he tries to drown himself in the ocean, something like that out of hatred for himself. Then he goes to the prime minister and says stuff like Lewis makes everyone's lives better and he's the type of person who screws up everyone's lives so he's trying to fix a piece of it so he asks for the roles to be switched. Lewis is released and goes to hospital and Sheriff is hanged the next day but it's not shown and it ends with him walking out the door.

My teacher brought the original script online for our ethics class, and I don't know which version I like better. In the original there's none of that MJ Major *beep* so...

That would have been a whole other kind of powerful ending.
That must be a very interesting ethics class too.
Both versions do make you think.
