What happens with the reporter?! (spoilers)

It is VERY clear that the reporter is the sole responsible person for Lewis being executed. The deal was clear, if she would just hold off her story for a few days, the guys would do their time and then be out.

If I was Sheriff and Beth, I would want that reporter to pay for her actions. Lewis basically died by her hand, she was the murderer.

If this was reality, would it be possible in the US legal system for Beth to take actions and sue the reporter? Would it be likely that she got a sort of sentence?

reply

No. She'd claim, "freedom of the press". It would be impossible to prosecute. No witness to any agreement. It's not in writing. The only consequence would be the reluctance of people to let her interview them after she breached a confidence.

She couldn't be legally punished, but if Beth took the law into her own hands...that's what I'd like to see.

Being inconsistent is better than being consistently bad.

After further thought in regards to the post above saying "No. She'd claim, "freedom of the press". It would be impossible to prosecute.", I THINK that only holds in a case that would be brought on by a government system. However a civil case she could probably bring to court.

Another post says "no witness" but I am certain Beth must have told Sheriff about it all. She certainly has proof her brother would have been freed soon because the judge basically reversed his decision in court for all to hear.

None the less, I doubt this would really happen in the 1990s or later in a country like Malaysia. (the change of the Judges decision based upon a newspaper story)

If I restrained myself from killing her I would definitely have ruined her career and her name in the press.

reply

In my head I make up an ending where Beth plants drugs on the reporter and gets her a** hauled off to good ol' prison.

Yes, preferably prison in Malaysia!

I figure if this were a real case, Beth would do all in her legal power to let all possible employers of MJ Major (news reporting or a new career) of what kind of a totally blind to reality "I don't give a *beep* what you tell me, it'll be OK" person she is. Perhaps a book entitled "How MJ Major and the Malaysian Justice System Killed My Brother Lewis".

reply

I like to think that all the major/reputable news outlets have common sense and after learning that MJ Major's "reporting" cost someone their life, the paper that she worked for would unceremoniously fire her and she will not be able to get a job with any other similar one.

On the flipside, if she stays in news reporting industry, she may have an exciting career ahead of her working for a tabloid, where her kind of attitude will not only be frowned upon, but welcomed. Maybe she will do what Sheriff used to, collect random pieces of dirt on celebrities, rich people, socialites, etc.

Freedom of press or not, she should have been hanged, not Lewis. My God what a worthless, annoying, selfish bi***!
