Rachel Portman's 'Cider House Rules' music score.

It's sadness verges on melancholy yet it manages to stay beautiful throughout. Nice use of piano and flute that continually restates the simple theme.

Portman's music is gorgeous, BUT, it is being used and abused to death in other films (i.e., trailers for The Notebook, and about a half-dozen other trailers) and in numerous commercials. I wish they would leave it alone.

Yes, it is excellent but in my opinion her score for Emma is even better. It sounds a bit similar but I like all these variations of Emma she has made for other movies. They are the best pieces having ever been written for a movie.

reply

Absolutely. What a great score.

Yeah, this film had a very memorable score.

I love the score for this film! It is absolutely beautiful. It is probably one of my all time favorite film scores.

*All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.*🎭

I completely agree - I own it and listen to it quite often. It is a very moody soundtrack to me and gorgeous to listen to every time.

I love this score. It should've won the Oscar. It definitely should've beat The Red Violin. Another one of my favorite Rachel Portman scores is Life is Sweet. Excellent film.

I am a big fan of the composer and this is my favorite by her. Even though it is somewhat repetitious, not uncommon for film scores anyway, it's glowingly beautiful, soft and lovely. Emma's score is wonderful and there's a bit more fun and whimsy in it, something which Portman is good at, but Ciderhouse is number one for me.

reply

Ha! No wonder I thought it was the same score that was used in Emma!!!

"Puss rules!"
"It's Pus"
