Amusing ourselves to Death

Has anyone read the book called "Amusing ourselves to Death?" It directly refrences this series as a medium for discourse to be taught in public schools. Or rather, he claims that TV was doing the education for our teachers, and that it was being made into entertainment and that the real substance of education would be lost. I have never seen the show, but I would just like to see what others thought of this idea.

I believe my summer school teacher used this program to educate us in our science class when I was in Junior High, about 1987. There were handouts and activities to go along with it.

I really liked the show (I'm a visual learner) and found the story and action to be exciting. As a student, you would work in a group and move up in rank as if you were on the ship.

I agree, it did entirely, take the place of the teacher. I don't know where he went or what he did, but when he popped in that VHS tape - lights low, I have no idea where he went. But there was discussion afterwards...and interaction with my fellow "shipmates" at my table.

I think it's a helpful tool. It shows the kids stuff that they wouldn't have access too. Field trips are expensive and many kids don't even live hears ports or some of the museums shown. I was lucky enough to actually visit the real Mimi because I went to elementary school in Connecticut. Even before that the videos helped.
