'Dont call me 'Dad', Astro! You're not my son!'

Growing up in the 80's i loved Astro Boy. It came on in Australia around 84 or so. My family and i watched every episode.

A few minutes into the first episode, i realised that this was not an ordinary cartoon. When Astros Dad tells Astro, who was based on Toby, the son he lost, that he didnt want Astro to call him "Dad". Actually made me cry.

Was there any other episodes that were pretty heavy content? I think the whole series was pretty dark in general. Thats why i love it!!!

Agreed with you! Moments like that makes me loved this show! At that time, it was not usual to see scenes like that in cartoons!

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

The story of the Light Ray robot is ridiculously tragic. "Save the Carolina 3", and (I think it's called) "Speeding Through the Storm". Definitely not your average kids' cartoons!

One of my favourite episodes is the one where they're stranded after abandoning ship, and meet Ivan the Russian robot, mainly because I adore the resolution of the greedy guy's story so much.

I am sort of the same as you, grew up in Australia watching it though watched it by myself.

I got up at 7am to watch Agro's cartoon connection but one day didn't realise I was on the wrong channel. During the first 7 seconds of just the starfield with the intro song winding up, my head was filled with curiosity and thought "what cartoon is this?" then when the verse/chorus came and astroboy came, my eyes lit up like a christmas tree. :D

And a few minutes into one episode, I was hooked and realised this was not an ordinary cartoon :D. I gave up Agro's cartoon connection show at 7am to watch Astroboy...then back to Agro to watch Voltron..I think.

Seems like every episode, there is some sort of melodrama. Still love it:)
