Is this better than the 1960's Tetsuwan Atomu?

I liked the original better than this one and this one better than the 2004 version. What do you think?

reply

It depends on the person really. Those who grew up with either version will be biased as to which is the better one, but I can safely say that both the 60's and 80's versions are excellent and as good as each other. The 80's version is still quite dark at times and filled with very important and interesting science fiction ideas. I haven't seen the recent series yet, but I'd have to say the 80's version is the most satisfying, mostly for reasons of nostalgia.

I really like the 80's version, compared to the 2004. The thing
that amazed me is that some of the stories, and structure
itself was light years ahead of many other cartoons even today.
It's strickly not just for kids. Yeah it was dark, and
unsual more violent that most but some terrific stories
"Save the Carolina 3", "Astro Fights the Alien" (Astro
assumes the identity of a military captain) are some of
my personal favorites

It's a shame not too many people have seen it or it will
reair as it's a classic. I would recommend anyone whose
reading this post who hasn't seen to get the DVD set on Ebay.

Actually its best if people get the region 4/Australian dvd set. It comes in a tin box with 11 dvds. Each dvd contains 5 episodes and trailers for other anime shows. The entire series is represented and is shown in the original sequence when aired on Japan TV. The versions here are the US Dubbed ones and they are obviously cut, but the 11th disc contains lots of extra features including the extended and original japanese language versions of episode 1 and 2. There is also a fantastic collectors booklet with artwork and articles. It retails for about $119 australian. The same company called Madman has just released the original 1960's series in another 11 disc set for roughly $139.95 australian!

Or they can the series in two parts which is way, way cheaper
at about $25.00 a set, that's basically $50 for the whole series.
I downloaded all the episodes a while back, but that's another
alternative if you want to spend less money for the whole thing.

The whole box set is a great collectable and much better than having it downloaded on your computer. My friends have come over to my house and seen the shiny tin box and been very impressed. The extras are also quite rare and a must for hardcore fans of this great series.

reply

The episodes I downloaded, weren't your run of the mill
cheap copies, they were taken straight from the dvd so there the
best quality. The other alternative is for people who want the
same series but actually want to save up money for the same deal who
don't care about a shiny tin box or trailers for other animes since
it has no impact on the set. So it really depends if you want
to spend more or less. I'll say that the dubbed version is very ,
very good.

Yeah dude, "Astro Fights the Alien" is *amazing*!

When Lt. Blackstone goes all 9/11 on the mothership... that's one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my whole life. He feels so much remorse for having tried to kill Astro by giving him the empty cartridge.

"It was wrong," Blackstone says. Man, that still gives me chills. I love that episode.

The 2004 series had some really great moments too, and people shouldn't dismiss it. The plot develops over the whole series, which is really cool, and the stuff with Shadow is frickin awesome. Also some of the 2 part episodes are amazing. The Shapeshifters. One of the best episodes of any show ever made, ever.

reply

Well I didn't care much for the 2003 version and I've never seen the '63 version, but I grew up on the '80 version so I'd say that one.

If you can read this, then I just wasted five seconds of your time! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Is ATLAS in the 2004 version? Or is it just random villains with no depth?

reply

I grew up with the 80's version, and it left a huge impression on me... at the time, I remember loving it for how it wasn't like "other" cartoons... it was often tragic and had real messages that went beyond "and remember kids, littering isn't cool".

I've seen only the first ep of the original 60's show, and for me it was hard to see a different take on such a childhood fave (even though I know it was first)... unlike the newer series which from the few bits I've seen, seems quite a different show. I own the AMAZING Aussie 80's box set as well as the 60's ones, but while I've watched the 80's ones to death, I have yet to delve into the older show... maybe it's time I gave it another chance?

IMO, nopers.
Its in color and redid many of the b/W series stories, but the original was heaven sent well done and voiced so that you couldn't think of anyone else do the characters.
And the original b/w was FUNNY! ADVENTURESOME! TENSE! SUSPENSEFUL! and loaded with fascination and sympathetic characters.
Check out the episode The Three Robotiers or Super Human Beings to gain the full effect of the original work.

As well, the color was remade apparently for a children audience. The b/w series was a rip-snortin' adventure with people actually croaking occasionally.

The electronic sound effects were wildly imaginative, particularly the wailing of Astro boy's jets (music synthesizer howls) and the rumble of policemen rushing to a crime scene (bongos played in a recognizable rhythm).

The color version's characters were seriously modified in both personality and name. Mr. Pompass was renamed Daddy Walrus...a goofy alternative. Dr. Elefun's professor-ish slightly British voice was switched to a grouchy non-distinct tone, and Astro Girl (called Uran in the color) went from toddler to teenager!!!

And finally in spite of technological advances with the color version, the b/w series MOVED! MUCH MORE. And it just plain more fun to watch. example: Astroboy has a guided missle shot at him, the missle curiously is robotic and has arms and legs. In fight attempt at escape both AB and the missle stop dead in the sky and engage in a round of rock/paper/scissors. AB loses, shrugs, and resumes the escape.

Also the BW series compensated the limited animation with remarkable plotting, stylistic artwork, and quick cutting to lend more illusion of movement. In short, they did the best with what little they had to work with.

The Color series, boil it all down, is a geared for children with a who-cares attitude about quality.

reply

and the 80's nasally theme song was an earsore compared to the 60's enthusiastic exciting children's chorus!
