One of the best Vladimir Mashkov movies, in my opinion.

Everytime I watch it, my eyes all in tears, when little kid Sanya runs after the imprisoned Tolyan crying "Daddy, daddy".. And the last scene with an old Sanya and beggar..
One of the best movies, russians made for the last 15 years, actually..
I wish, I could tell this to Vladimir personally, when I've met him in Hollywood, in one small cafe on Hollywood Blvd (right next to Stella Adler, where I had a chance to study), in the year of 2000, but unfortunately, I haven't seen The Thief by this time..

unless you've checked your library- or maybe my library just has made good selections for their movies section....

I really liked this film too, but I don't know if I'd lavish it with that much praise. The mood and setting were fantastic. I felt like I was there. Great story too, but I felt nothing for the mother, and even the child for that matter. I just don't have that much patience with people who adore a s s h o l e s. I know life isn't always pretty, but I have no sympathy for victims that do nothing to save themselves. For that reason I think I missed out on much of the Tragedy of the film. Yekaterina Rednikova is stunningly beautiful and Misha Philipchuk is a cute kid (my g/f wouldn't shut up about it).

I have been watching films for many years (about 40 to be exact) and am very familiar with foreign films (my daughter in law is from Ukraine). I purchased this movie on VHS in NY because it looked good and I was not disappointed. I absolutely fell in love with this movie and have been watching and waiting for it to be released on DVD. Even though it is a thousand times better on DVD than VHS they could've put more effort into the special features, audio, and the overall quality of the film especially since this was an academy award nominee for Best Foreign Film in 1998. That is how you find all these great movies you normally wouldn't hear about. You get a list of all the foreign film submissions for the academy awards from each country and you hunt them down. I've been doing that for years and I've seen so many great movies that I wouldn't have normally seen. Believe it or not, many of them end up becoming more popular some years later but more of them do not. So hunt down these great gems and you will be rewarded.
