Suggested this to someone, got chewed out

Wanting to be a filmmaker all my life, I thought I'd mimic Tarantino and take his route of working at the video store that I spent so much of my childhood frequenting. I was working there in 2000, when a customer once asked me for a movie recommendation in comedy.

I suggested this one to him, and I'll never forget being at work a couple of weeks later and getting yelled at by him, in front of a lot of people, for suggesting this movie. He said he hated it, and gave me a look like, "how the hell could you like this movie?" but I stood my ground, smiled proudly, and told him that I did.

I always remember that when this title comes up.

WOW, customers like that is what is wrong with America. Like why humiliate others over a movie? So stupid of him.

Anyways, although I'm not on that jerk's side, I don't see why people suggest this film as a comedy. I actually, thought it was more of a psychological thriller in a way. I mean, sure it has some comedy, and it's mostly dark humor, but what film doesn't? Even those serious drama films have the occasional comedy line.

Anyways, this film is pretty good. I actually like this movie a lot. When I've told my friends and family about this film, I mostly pitch it as a dark psychological thriller with some dark humor. To me, this film is almost like a roller coaster.

I was actually living in Canada at the time, so you can see that the stereotype of Canadians always being so nice and polite is not the rule at all.

If it weren't for Boyd's goofy character and some other things in this movie, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but because of those aspects, I'd have to still stick with this being labelled as dark comedy. It's definitely got some very serious content in it, though.

That really sucks that someone treated you like that. I don't care how much someone is offended by a movie. you don't make a friggin scene in public about it especially when he asked your opinion.

I'm not a big fan of it, would give it a 6/10, but it was just hard to enjoy for me. I did find the acting very good and the twists kept coming and I found the wedding pretty funny. Overall though, it was hard to get through, and some purposeful comedic moments like in the clean up montage weren't that funny. I would have loved for it to be funny, because walking down Target aisles, looking that suspicious, should be funny. I just felt that in some ways it was too dark and the comedy just didn't go far enough to even it all out, and Laura's breakdown felt rushed at the end. I definitely see it as more of a suspense film. I think for a dark comedy, I liked Heathers better. I think you just have to be more surreal and less frank about Christian Slater going on a killing rampage and trying to get away with it. But I totally get why others would prefer this because it really filled me with dread, and I think that was purposeful. It was almost like watching Boys Don't Cry, Funny Games, or Monster for me, because it was just that brutal.

This movie was hilarious. If you would have recommended it to me, I would have appreciated it.

I would have totally recommended this movie- and I have- bc it is so hilarious but it is a bit on the dark side so my recommendation would definitely come with a warning. Maybe ask what kind of sense of humor a person has first. If they approve of very dark dark dark humor then let them know what's in store. Ask them what kinds of comedies they actually find funny. Sounds like your guy at the video store may be into lighter fare???
