Brilliance. One of the best dark comedies.

How have I not seen this until today? I've seen darker, but this film strikes a balance that appeals to a broader audience. I was literally crying from laughter at the end. Great cast, script and directing. Thank you.

I've only ever seen the ending scene. I've seen it twice and.... What the **** is wrong with the director? How the hell is a disabled dog, an amputee, a paralyzed guy, and a nervous breakdown funny? What's his encore? An old woman being burned alive as she's violently raped?

If this is a comedy, so is Saw.

Then you have no frame of reference. You're like a child that just wondered into the conversation. But seriously, you saw the part of the movie out of context. If you'd seen the whole movie then you'd understand why everything led to that ending. It was brilliant and hilarious. You missed out.

Well said, Walter. :)

It's very funny in context of the movie. You have taken it out of context

Jeez, I didn't even mention the kid being on crutches.

If the rest of the movie was a ****ty as that ending, or The Rundown (one of the worst action-comedies I've ever seen)... this director deserved a five year hiatus. Collateral was alright, but this and Rundown were just trash. And Rundown didn't even have to be needlessly cruel to be crap.

You are familiar with the expression 'a black comedy' are you not? And by that I don't mean it has Eddie Murphy and Will Smith in it. The ending of VBT is brilliant!! You're not supposed to be laughing at the end scene. It's the shock of the reality that is now their lives!

reply

If you aren't supposed to laugh, it isn't a black comedy. Very Bad Things is dark but not funny.

You are supposed to laugh and Very Bad Things is funny. Hysterical, actually.

reply

Actually, it's painfully unfunny.

It's gained a cult following precisely because it set out to offend most people and to appeal to those with a dark sense of humor. I actually love reading on these message boards how horrified and offended people were over this movie. It tells me it accomplished what it set out to do.

Every character in this movie is a office-working dullard suburbanite living in an ugly housing estate and all wanting to live the typical BS American lifestyle. Everything goes horribly wrong for them at every turn in this movie and that's why it's so hilarious and pleasing to people like me.

The average person probably wanted to see the boys have a fun bachelor party and for Cameron Diaz to have the wedding of her dreams. That would've been the typical narrative but every expectation is subverted. It's brilliant.

reply

The only thing about it that offends me is its unfunniness.

reply

Sure buddy 

Masterful commentary about a movie you've only seen one scene of. Hey, I only saw the word-filled opening of Star Wars - what a boring *beep* movie.

reply

Loved The Rundown, one of my fav with The Rock.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

reply

I still enjoy this movie, but I remember thinking it was a masterpiece on the first viewing.

I've always liked it and have been surprised by critics negative responses to it. Maybe it goes to darker places than some people can handle

Only a rusty tool would form an opinion on once scene. If you can't find the humor in this brilliant movie, you aren't one to be invited to many things, that's for sure. This is definitely a genius, well acted, well written $&#* show!

It's The Hangover on a ( bad ) acid trip.
