scene that confused me

in the scene where Eddie Murphy's character finds that none of the prisoners can read, I wondered why people would send them letters at all knowing they were illiterate. it made no sense. one man's mother sent him a letter telling him essentially his whole family was dead...so his mom can read and write but he can't?

You have to remember some of those men were in there when they were very young. The one character who was I believe narrating the movie as an old man said he was in there since he was 14 years old, and considering the time period, those prisoners probably had little to no education or probably didn't even go to school at all. Remember it was the south during the 1930's.

I could see someone sending a letter to someone who cant read or write if there is no other form of communication (which there wasnt) HOWEVER I was curious about the prisoner who they said could read but was released. OK so was he the only prisoner in the entire prison who could read or just in that particular group?? And if its the latter then was he writing their replies as well as reading the letters??

It wasn't uncommon for illiterates to receive letters. Someone else would just read to them. They had no other way to communicate so they had to do what they had to do.

If i recall, the letter was written by the neighbor, not the mother. The mother and father died along with two sisters and the dog.

Correct. The aunt. And the dog had worms
