The reason this movie failed

This is arguably one of the best 'black' movies ever made but the reason it didn't succeed commercially or even critically is probably the actors. Both EM and ML are great and they do a fantastic job here by bringing just the right amount and type of humor to keep the movie entertaining yet not taking anything away from the drama. BUT after Nutty Professor and Nothing to Lose, I think that everyone expected a bottomless pit of fart jokes and 'silly black guy' antics and they did not find any of that here.

Everyone, myself included, left the theater disappointed by the failure of this film to provide the crazy fun ride it was supposed to. It's only when I watched it years later, on a DVD, that I realized what a great movie this was.

I'd go as far as to say that Life had more drama than Precious or any other similarly hyped black movie that tries way too hard and uses obvious cheap tricks to squeeze a wound for more blood. It's a damn shame too because we won't see anything like this again.

it is a very good movie..watching now on HBO again!

...as far as failing from a Budget:Gross aspect, I don't know why it cost $75,000,000. Aside from some vintage cars where the hell did 75,000,000 go Eddie and MArtin's pocket??

At the time Eddie Murphy was a really big star so I could believe a lot of money went to him.

It was criminally marketed as a "comedy" when it should have been marketed as a drama. There are humorous moments in drama, but the story is sweeping in scope, pregnant with socio-historic commentary and, given the state of the prison-industrial complex today, quite revelatory.

Murphy and Lawrence have demonstrated they were quite capable of acting through an epic story dramatically. Producers apparently didn't think the public would accept their names as part of a drama, so tried to play it safe in calling it a comedy.

For shame.

But it does make a difference. There are those who left the movie disappointed because they had an expectation based on how the movie was marketed.

Sure, there are people like us who recognize it as a great movie regardless how it was marketed. But, not everyone is like us.

And, it is definitely not a dark comedy.

D'accord, fair enough and, yes, there were lots of great laughs in this movie, for sure. A few of my favourite scenes -

"There is no Boom Boom room, Ray."
"When they is one, when they is one, don't come down to the M-Fer 'cause you ain't gettin' in."

"And I got the keys in case you want to leave a *beep* in the woods. I know how you think, you M-Fer."

"Well, you better put a little somethin' in yo' step, let'em know you ain't from around here. Hey, Country boy! Cock-a-doodle-do, M-Fer!"

"Ray, this steak tastes like butter."
"I made it just for you, Cookie. Boy! Get us some Worcistercistershire sauce...clean off this damn table...I'll whup yo' ass!"

Precisely, DRDMovieMusings; I remember. And the marketing didn't just suggest "comedy genre," but big, broad, holding your sides, laff riot comedy. Of course the theatres full of raucous teens were disappointed--and meanwhile the people like me wouldn't have bothered attending if they'd thrown in a free popcorn on top of an admission pass.

So many thoughtful movies have tanked because the people responsible for marketing were too hesitant or lazy or unimaginative to accurately convey the tenor of poignancy, but this is one of the biggest casualties.

They weren't really as big, Bernie Mac especially who aside from being a comedian this was practically his first project

The critics actually LIKED The Nutty Professor (the first one, not the sequel), and Bravo ranked it #71 one of the funniest movies of all time.

I thought it was great when I first saw it, I feel the same way now, it's a shame most people don't realize what a great film this is.
