This Movie Sucks

If you want to watch a good film about Artemisia, watch the Canadian made Docu-Drama, it is way better, and the facts are much more accurate.

Thanks for your mention of the Canadian film on Artemisia. I liked this 1997 French film, but am not familiar with the facts.I think saying it sucks is too strong. The depiction of the way artists worked (wooden scaffoldings and teams of assistants) seemed very authentic. However, thanks for the tip on the docu-drama.

i suppose sucks may be a strong word.

I was speaking too much off the cuff when I criticized use of the word "sucks."If you didn't like the movie--well you didn't like it and you can emphasize that in any way you choose. I'm still interested in the Canadian film about Artemisia. Is it on DVD? Do you remember the title? Thanks

The Canadian film is called Artimisia as well. here is the link for it http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103722/ it's not for everyone, it is kind of a wierd format, but if you like the artist and want to know more about it i would highly recommend it, i watched it in an art history class.

First I just wanna say I respect your opinion...Personally I really liked the movie I thought it was beautiful. After I saw it I tried to find out more about the real artist and was kind of upset that the movie was really far off from the facts...but I still love it...I will definitely be checking out that Canadian made Docu-Drama you spoke of! Thanks for mentioning that!

I read the book "Passion of Artemisia" by Susan Vreeland, who states the book is fictionalized history. I enjoyed the book very much and thought the movie would follow the events of Artemisia's life as they were told in the book. But the book starts at the trial of Artemisia and so I was surprised that the movie portrayed a love affair with her rapist/teacher and ended with her trial. It was a totally different story than what I read .... so another incident of "the book was better than the movie" (although the movie does not state it is based on the book. Oh well.

It doesn't suck. Even if it's not an entirely factual movie, it's still quite good. I love it.

That is a bit of a over blown statement. It was a good movie, although slow at times. It looks like the love story was exaggerated, at least compared to historical records. Even the book this is loosely based on, barely covers the same subjects. Hard to determine what the real people were thinking at the time, when they are restricted to the laws of the society. Even the use of torture to get to the truth in a court of law, is so out of context from today's standards, we can only watch this movie in fascination. I liked the movie, but only rated it a 6 for overall content. It had a lot of good moments, but too much melodrama overall.

Then how about telling him, instead of me? When a comment is directed to someone specifically, then you should 'reply' to that writer.

Thanks for posting the name of a better movie.

It seems to me that the word "sucks" is accurate when applied to this movie's historical accuracy.
