Doug Llewellyn is back!

I was shocked to see Judge Millian introduce him at the beginning of the season premier episode today. It appears to be permanent! Goodbye and good riddance to Curt!

And he looks great for a 78 year old man too.

reply

At first, I thought you were being sarcastic. Boy, he sure does look good for his age. Good move replacing that idiot. I remember liking Doug on the old P.C. I'm glad he's back.

reply

He's not that old, is he? He looks great.

reply

Haven't watched yet, but happy to read this. I can't stand that condescending Curt. Doug was always respectful.

reply

Respectful. Bleh. They replaced spicy with flavorless.

I'll miss Curt's attitude. And the way he defended the judge at every turn. His condescension, especially when warranted, was what endeared me to him.

But yeah, Doug. My grandma loved him.

reply

I agree. I'm old enough to remember Doug and Judge Wapner. (Though, I'm not old enough to be a grandma. Used to watch with my grandma after school) Doug's time has passed.

Yeah, Curt could be catty and condescending. But I thought only to those who deserved it. Doug is a glad hand kind of guy. "Things didn't go your way...Too bad....Good to see you...Thanks for coming....Next."

" Doug's time has passed ". That's kind of a ridiculous statement, since he's only been back a few days. How about giving him a little time. Let's see how you feel about a statement like that if you ever end up needing employment as a senior citizen. I sure hope that you're not working in human resources.

I'm sorry. I forget some people are not only incapable interpreting posts in context but are also unfamiliar with some idiomatic phrases.

"Doug's time has passed" means his interview style is old-fashioned. It has nothing to do with how long he's been back.

Let's see how you feel about a statement like that if you ever end up needing employment as a senior citizen. I sure hope that you're not working in human resources.

Firstly, I would hope that I n I wouldn't take a comment on a TV show board so personally, especially one about a tv personality, that I would wish ill on the poster. Secondly, I said nothing about whether Doug should be employed. At best, I suggested he was ill suited to the current position. Lastly, should I need employment as a senior citizen, I would hope that I had the common sense to seek out a job that matched my skill set. And should I aspire to one that does not, I would update my skills to fit it. I wouldn't expect an employer I worked for 30 yrs previously to take me on, if I was completely unfamiliar with the newest software.

reply

We'll just have to agree to disagree. You don't care for Doug Llewelyn. I think he's fine. Different strokes...

reply

Given, the variety of opinions on the thread, I not sure why it was thought we had to agree in the the first place.

Unless a current 'interview style' includes references to hashtags and internet acronyms Doug's interview 'style' is just fine..

reply

A lot of people don't like Curt, but he always stood up for Judge Milian. The lowlife defendant today said that the judge's opinion didn't mean anything to him because "she's just a female."

Doug kept talking to him and didn't chastise him for that remark. Curt would have told him to leave, as he has previously done with people who have made sexist comments about the judge.

reply

I believe his exact words were, "Females, You know how they is."

The defendant was a garbage person, and his exit interview was tailor made for Curt. Doug gave him a pass and a smile. A missed opportunity.

reply

Yea, I was so shocked to see that on the season opener today. That was way cool how Milian introduced him to at the beginning. I was like what the heck when she stopped the bailiff and walked outside. I thought the bailiff was in trouble or something the way she stopped everything. Great way to start the new season. Judge Judy better bring it in with a bang next week after seeing this.

Also, this makes me wonder if Curt's curtness, cattiness and condescension got him in it with production and Marilyn Millian for that matter and they fired him. Someone ought to do some digging and figure that out. I have always said Curt doesn't look like the type of guy who would get along very well with Marilyn Milian outside of this program. He looks like someone that she would go ballistic on for having a snippy attitude problem.

reply

I think this has been discussed here before, but doesn't Curt do the voice-overs at the beginning of each case? Still sounds like the same voice, even with Doug back.

reply

Omg if those hysterical overdramatized voice overs are Curt's, I have a whole new respect for court. Those voice overs are the funniest thing ever. I really wish he did that for Judge Judy.

reply

I tape the show on my trusty old VCR and watch it the next day so I can fast-forward through the ad breaks and repetitive nonsense.

So today I was also pleasantly surprised at yesterday's return of Doug Llewelyn.

At first, I wondered if he was just putting in a cameo appearance to kick off the new season, or even subbing for the aptly-named Curt. I thought Curt might be on a medical leave of absence to have a personality surgically implanted or something. 😉

I'll have to check the credits to see if Curt is listed as the announcer. That didn't occur to me, since I also FF through those melodramatic voice-over intros.

Then again, I pay so little attention to the credits that I can't remember offhand if he was even listed in the first place.

I'd be interested to learn whether Curt went away mad, or just went away. I won't miss his junkyard dog approach.

I always wondered why they stayed with someone who's so sour and dour, and seemed programmed to aggressively 1) blindly defend the judge and decision, and 2) turn the screws one final time on the departing loser(s).

Funny. You wondered why they would stick with him for so long, and then mentioned the two main reasons in the same sentence. :-)

Also, since they still have him doing the voiceovers, I have to assume he didn't actually go away, mad or otherwise. There's no news on the net about this, so until someone can say for sure, my guess is he has other work that might keep him from travelling, and he can do the voice work from anywhere in the world, so he cut back on his People's Court gig.

reply

Curt's live play-by-play call of the 1980 Olympic "Miracle on Ice" victory of the US over the USSR is actually enshrined in an exhibit in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

His reporting of the Hindenburg crash was legendary.

"Oh, the humanity!! Harv?"

reply

Touché!

But then the question devolves to "Why replace him at all, then?" and/or "If he had to be replaced for reasons unrelated to his performance, why not choose another snotty, supercilious toady?".

Except for watching "Judge Judy" many years ago, until I burned out permanently, I've only "sampled" other TV court shows.

But it occurs to me that other court shows (Judge Mathis, Hot Bench) don't even bother with a "host" during the brief post-case parting reactions.

They may have the bailiff hanging around to keep the peace, but the litigants just give their feedback to the camera. And they do it without all of the on-air blundering around; I've always wondered why TPC never tightened up the exit sequence, even if they just edited out the hallway guy having to steer them to their marks.

So, regardless of whether they go with sweet or sour, the "hallway guy" seems like a waste of money.

reply

Well, the hallway guy has always been a part of this show, whether needed or not, by now it's integral.

As for why Doug is there now, my guess is they're trying to boost sagging ratings by bringing back an old favorite from days gone by. I hope it works. It's just not working for me.

reply

I have always loathed Curt, so I'm glad he's gone, but I've always always said the position is wholly unnecessary. Judge Milian is awesome, and the only part of the show I care about is the actual court case. Harvey, Curt/Doug, and all the voiceovers and such just take the class level down several notches. But at least Doug is better than Curt. Anybody would be, though, I would think.

reply

[deleted]

I agree, Curt is definitely still doing the voiceovers, so obviously he wasn't fired and will probably resume his role in the hallway if the Llewellen experiment fails.

reply

Well all I can say is that I am freaked out! I wonder if he will be record the intro to the show. This should be interesting. Welcome back, Doug!

reply

Harvey Levin does the voiceover and announcing. Curt is the interviewer after each case.

reply

Welcome back, Doug! But I liked Curt's snarkiness.

reply

No. During the opening credits and when the litigants are entering the courtroom, it's Curt's voice you hear. Harvey does the "back from commercial" summary as the Judge comes in and he does the very annoying interviews of the people outside.

So my question was whether Doug Llewellyn will be re-recording the opening credits and/or will he start doing the voice-over as the litigants enter the courtroom.

Unrelated topic: Now we have Douglas MacIntosh - Bailiff and Doug Llewellyn - hallway guy. Doug is not a common name so it's a little amusing having 2 of them.

reply

Doug is not a common name so it's a little amusing having 2 of them.

Funny. I can think of 3 off the top of my head.

Anyway...

Douglas is Douglas
Doug is Doug.

Shouldn't be any confusion.

I don't trust people who don't like pets and I don't trust people who pets don't like.

reply

It's definitely Curt still doing the voiceovers when the cases are introduced.

I loved Curt! I find this Doug fellow boring.

reply

Maybe they can bring back Wapner. He'll be 97 next month.

While I got a kick out of seeing him (I've been watching since the Wapner days) I was sort of underwhelmed. Nothing really special, but maybe he just needs to get back in a groove. I was under the impression it was a one-of special appearance, so I am a bit surprised to see that this is not temporary.

reply

It would be great to see Wapner back but not the same.

anyone know why they replaced Curt?

I'd like to know why too.
