Re-watching the series after many years, I was surprised by how relatively little his character had to do with any of the storylines.

I had him, in my mind, as a mainstay of the series.

He was always around, yes, but often just as a foil to either Ted, Jeffrey or Gladys.

And the ongoing romance with April did little to alleviate matters.

Much preferred Jeffrey Holland in the role of James Twelvetrees in You Rang M'Lord where he did manage to get some storylines and character depth worthy of his talents as a comic actor.
