The ultimate "cool kids" show
The Church of 60 Minutes is the ultimate "cool kids" show in the history of television.
From the beginning, they marketed themselves as an unstoppable, truth-telling newsmagazine, the final authority of wrong and right in America. Yet even a brief search will find numerous incidents where the show has quoted its victims out of context to support their pre-determined view of the stories they're covering.
Naturally, they endlessly remind you of the thousands of awards they've won over the years from their brown-nosing peers, and like the Rolling Stones and the Simpsons, seem to feel that lasting longer than everybody else is yet another signifier of just how cool they are.
It's the gung-ho triumph of the smug "don't you know who we are" pose: self-centered, self-congratulating, self-adoring, self-deifying. It's fittingly inevitable that a country that fawns over this show would eventually elect a president like Donald Trump.
