Obvious a cultural transformation has occurred since then - the fact is that a large percentage of the population would rather watch comedy, romance, and fictional dramas than be informed on real-world conflict.

Not just the 90s, but also for the 80s and much of the 70s it was at or near the top of ratings heap.
