what is it about this movie?

i love it and i think it's great. but i don't know why. is it sam lee's presence? then, what is there about him that makes it so good? what is it about movies where a great director just finds someone off the street and they film something beautiful? like with nobody knows*. why are these better than films with practiced people preforming with training and methods instead of newbies who have the uncanny ability to just do it. i don't know what 'it' is but they do it nevertheless.

this thing seriously needs a DVD release... it seems to be Fruit Chan's only relatively well-known film aside from his segment from 'Three Extremes' ... he needs to make it more public

sam lee has lost it since then.

exactly. i love the rawness, the natural (sometimes unnatural) acting, the small but significant stories. they can feel part documentary when they capture an expression, which in many cases is real, because they kind of are. i like the odd things like in the scene where moon's boss is trying to talk moon into killing someone so he can be rich, and other instances in the film, where the camera just trails off along the corridor into another room.

one of my favourites where non-actors are used is 'unknown pleasures' by jia zhang-ke. quite a wonderful little film.
