im a big fan of samurai movies, particularly the very violent, action packed ones. anyway, anyone recommend this?

This is actually one of Kenji's more down to earth samruai movies in terms of violence and style. Dont get me wrong though. There is plenty of sword fighting to be had but the action does take a back seat to the story which is kinda sad since it is essentially about the end of the samurai (hence the alternate title of the Last Samurai). However, it does make a nice final film for the director since the film ultimatly ends on an anti-violent note (i dont want to go into specifics since I might risk ruining the film)and the film istelf has a rather anti-violence message. Even the one scene of extreme violence doesn;t really make you cheer in delight since the main character was never really a vengful person and the fact that even he was brought to this point is kinda tragic. It is a great film though.

Instead of a hitlist, I have a Do NOt Kill List . . . . . so far no one is on it.

where can this be found?

It's probably not for you, gypsy-catcher, it's not an extreme bloodfest. Unusually for a film set in the turmoil at the end of the Edo period, it doesn't really take sides - there are sympathetic characters from various factions and they do make some effort to reach agreements and avoid bloodshed. A long film, rather episodic, thoughtful. I like it a lot.

Sorry, gypsy-catcher - I wasn't writing you off, not at all. It's just that you said you liked action-packed samurai movies, I was just giving you a steer. This movie ambles along at a fairly steady pace.

I'm no expert on swordplay but I think we do get to see Okita Souji do his "three-piece strike" :)

hmm...ill have to see if i can get my hands on it. or maybe i should first get around to watching that stack of unwatched movies first. anyway thanks for the advice.

I am a huge chambara fan, and even though it does not reach up the violence level of Lone Wolf & Cub, this is arguably one of the best samurai films I have ever seen. It is such a shame that this film has yet to see a proper US release, I will be writing an in depth letter to Criterion hoping they will give it some justice.

Hello, Viderum, I don't really have anything to add, it's just nice to see some life on the board for this fine and much neglected film. I'm not in the USA, anyway, so there's not much I can do about it. (I got my copy from a very nice chap I got to know on these boards, 'nuff said.)

I'm not actually a fan of the mega-violent type of chanbara, I like believeable characterisation and some interesting historical background. Both of which we have here.
