Always been confused by the ages of the Peanuts gang

Sometimes it seems like they are elementary school kids, like in the Halloween and Easter cartoons but in others like this one where they are having a non supervised NYE party and have an assignment like reading War and Peace, something I didn't have to read until 12th grade, makes them seem older. Has it ever been said how old they are supposed to be?

I always imagine the kids between 4 and 10 years or so.
Charlie must be in the gifted and talented class- Kidding.
The kids always are in more adult situations, and remember the adults are absent except for an occasional "wha wa wawa wha".
