All the explanations you need here...

- Chris is the one who brings up the 4.0 idea to Tim early one. He says he heard it on MTV. (It could have also been Rand who thought of the idea all along.)

- Chris pretends not to wanna go through with it (killing Rand) after Tim makes up his mind on it.

- Chris knew that Tim wouldn't actually throw Rand over the cliff in the beginning, because Chris was actually in a master plan with Rand all along. Rand told Chris about the plan he had with Tim to double cross Chris. Tim obviously does not know about this 'till the end of the film.

- Rand had a plan with both Chris and Tim, the master plan being that Tim would die. But, if Chris were to have died at the end, (due to maybe Tim pushing Chris off the ledge) Rand would still have been in the clear in terms of being a suspect and getting his 4.0, which I believe he does not take at the end.
(It seems to not be what he wanted all along, but rather to make a twisted plot among Emma and Chris and/or to have them look like suspects in the end just for his sheer enjoyment or "drama".)

- Emma is working with Tim and Rand and planning on double crossing Chris. (Which is maybe why Rand knows about Chris' sexual problems.) Rand knows that Natalie dying is part of the plan with Emma, which is what his suicide also is intended for.

- Emma's plan involves making Natalie think she's pregnant which leads her into problems with Rand. Emma knew that along with Natalie's "pregnancy", that once Rand "killed himself", she would end up killing herself which would give Emma the 4.0 since they were roommates.

- Rand is purposely a jerk to Natalie.

- Tim is trying to frame Chris to "push him over the edge" so to speak, not knowing that Chris is in on what Rand and him are trying to do.

ONLY PROBLEMS:
- Why don't Rand and Chris just kill Tim in the beginning?
(Probably because that would interfere with Emma's plan.)

- Is Emma really with Tim the whole time, or only towards the end because Tim has convinced her of his plan with Rand?
(Probably the whole time, I think Emma and Tim knew that the school counselor lady was listening to them talk about Chris at the cafe or whatever.)

- What was the point of recording Tim on tape?

reply

- Also I can't really figure out why Chris would still hang around Emma. Maybe she is his and Tim's pet seeing as they tell her to keep quiet about what happen to Tim and they know about her plan against Natalie.

in the beginning Chris joked about plotting a murder to make it look like a suicide that way they would both get 4.os, but he was joking the entire time. However Tim wanted to go through with it. I believe both Chris and Rand knew that Tim wanted to kill Rand and Chris and Rand decided to just play along with it, i think they were just doing it in the beginning to play a prank on Tim for being an ass. But after killing Rand, Tim's evil and selfish side shows more and more which scares off Chris. As for the 4.0 deal (chris knew the entire time that Rand isnt dead therefore he never contemplated about it) i believe chris was astonish about how cold Tim was about this entire thing. And then Natalie died, this made Chris feels sick because he felt it was his and tims fault for her death, Tim couldnt care less. Chris then tried to find comfort with Emma (who broke up with him) still he wanted to make it up to her, only to find her giving head to Tim. I believe by this time Chris realized that
she was part of Tim's scam, so he couldnt care less about what happened to her anymore. Emma tried apologizing which almost fooled Chris, until he finds out that Natalie was never pregnant. So when Emma called him out to the woods at night, he decided to call Rand to come back. What was suppose to be a prank against Tim, ended up being a murder because well...come on now Tim and Emma pretty much pushed Natalie into committing suicide. They didnt take the 4.0 in the end, because their intention was never to kill a room mate, it just happened. As for Emma, i believe they let her live on with the guilt and humiliation, since the whole school now knows that she lied to Natalie about the pregnancy test. She got the 4.0 because her roommate ID committed suicide, but now everyone look at her with a different eye.
