Hven't seen this yet--Is it a remake of MA VIE...?

I'd like to see this movie, especially because it was apparently Gwen Verdon's last movie, which is what led me to it in the first place. Reading the bit of info here makes me wonder if this is a USA remake of the Belgian movie MA VIE EN ROSE http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119590/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1. That was very good movie, as I recall (it was released in 1997, and I saw it in the theater in '97 or '98). Does the little boy in BRUNO (or THE DRESS CODE) want to be, or feel that he is, a girl? I think the boy in MA VIE dreams of growing up to marry his best pal (a boy), and practices wearing a makeshift veil and carrying a bouquet (please correct if I'm remembering incorrectly).

Anyone want to tell a bit about this movie? (Please forewarn of any particular spoilers--thanks.)

Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD.

I don't recall Bruno ever indicating that he actually wants to be a girl, he just wants to wear dresses. In fact, it seems that he only really wants to wear dresses because he has dreams involving angels and he envies their holy vestments. So when (I hope this isn't too much of a spoiler) by the end if the movie Bruno shows up in a Diana Ross outfit I find it a little odd, and wonder if its just his family who decided on that and Bruno just went along with it. His first dress was simply a recreation of one of the holy vestments he saw in a dream.
