Why isn't this series on dvd?

It'd surely be a cult classic IMO.

reply

Because Disney owns it. And I don't think they even know... or care. ;_;

reply

...Disney owns it? I've never heard that before.

You can actually buy a Samurai Pizza Cats DVD on eBay, but I'm 99.9% sure that it's a bootleg.

Disney/ABC bought out Saban International in 2001.
Saban owned SPC, Digimon, Power Rangers, etc.

reply

...so? Just because they had the rights to it back in 1995 doesn't mean that they still had them in 2001.

reply

Yes it does. Disney still own Saban and everything within the Saban library. And whenever Disney get along of something, they rarely let it go.

As long as Disney owns Saban, they will own SPC, and if they don't think it will make money, they won't release it.

reply

Um, hooray? We've already established that:

A) Disney owns Saban
B) Saban once held the rights to Samurai Pizza Cats

What I'd like to know if it's absolutely certain that Saban still had the rights to it in 2001. Just because they had the rights to it at one point doesn't mean that they'll still have it five years later.

Well, seeing as how Saban essentially created Samurai Pizza Cats themselves after purchasing Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, I think it's pretty safe to assume they never lost it.

Why would they mysteriously lose the rights to something they created themselves?
And like, where would it even go?

reply

If they don't see any reason to having kept the rights to it, they could have just let it expire. Or they may not have been able to keep the rights, as the original holder may have wanted them back.

It couldn't "expire" over time, because Saban didn't just license it, they bought it and -owned- it. They physically possessed all of the SPC/KNT video and audio.

With SPC being Saban's property, no one could take it away from them unless they personally decided to sell it. Which they did; to Disney.

Don't be fooled. That one is an unlicensed bootleg.
A boooooootleg!

reply

man, i love Saban's shows :D
Disney sucks :\

I downloaded the torrent, converted all 51 eps to DVD-compatible mpeg (through TMPGenc), then burned the entire series onto 3 DVD-Rs. Horrible quality (tv-rips), but its the only thing I have. The torrent is 5 gigs (the one I got off of www.torrentspy.com) but I'm hoping for a legit release sometime in the future...although it seems unlikely. I do enjoy my "dvds" but it doesn't beat the real thing...you know, without the WB or FOXKids in the bottom right hand portion of the screen? :)

Keeping my fingers crossed still...

In answer to the original question...

Unfortunately, I doubt this will ever be released on DVD. I work for Cartoon Network and know the price it costs to package a show up into a boxset. I doubt the fan base of SPC, despite it being one of the best cartoons ever made, is large enough to justify these costs. Disney simply would not make their money back, SPC has a niche following at best.

Ahem... Discotek Media says two boxsets (sub and dub) are on the way.
