Why Did They Change So Much From the Original Show?

I can understand some basic changes since Doug was in a new school and a little older, etc. But why did they change the way half the characters looked, the entire style of humor on the show, and create such lame attempts at comedy?

It didn't? The show really wasn't much different when it was on Nick. I don't get everyone's problems with that. A few supporting characters had different appearances and the humor was slightly goofier. Big deal.

You'd have to have had a lobotomy to not think the shows are drastically different.

Nickelodeon Doug was brilliantly written and brilliantly put together. It had subtleties.

Disney's Doug was the antithesis of "subtle," had constant noise in the background, was poorly written, predictable, and the voice acting was terrible.

I think they just saying that things changes as you get older, and it made a fairly good storyline in the first episode, but they changed too much in one go, and the rest of the show just looked like it was trying too hard to be different in my opinion.

Copyright reasons.

reply

Can't be that, it had the same people involved.

reply

Negative. It is that, regardless of the production team the original copyright and rights is owned by Nickelodeon, and therefore they had to change it in order for Disney to show it. Just like Craig Bartlett can't create anymore episodes of Hey Arnold! because Nickelodeon owns it, not him even if he created it.

Really, that makes no sense at all. The main copyrightable object of the show is the left handed kid Doug, and he didn't change at all. Kind of shoots a huge hole in your theory. It's probably much more banal, bring in some new team members, or Disney vs. Nick had a different guy supervising and just had a different sense of humor, so things get shifted a bit, I liked the original and the Disney version each was unique and good. I wish they'd put out the DVD's, or at least put them up on Amazon.

reply

I don't completely understand it either, but yeah it doesn't make sense but that's how it is. lol.

I grew up with the Disney version so that's the one I prefer(I didn't get to see the Nick version until it came out on DVD due to me not having cable)

reply

Billy West is hoping that Nick buys back all the rights.
