Total absence of suspense

I watched it 3 times to see if it was just me, or that this really was a very poor effort. It wasn't just me.

The total absence of suspense was astonishing, especially for this type of content.

Horrid, horrid!

Avoid it like the plague, because it's 17 minutes of your life that you will never get back.

Fair enough. Question for you - have you ever seen this story in another movie? I believe I did LONG ago (approx. 30 years), and vaguely remember liking it. I think it may have been shown to us in school when we were learning about Poe. However, I can't even recall if it was in color or B&W or if anyone famous was in it (Even if there were, at that age - 15 maybe - not sure if I would have known that much anyhow.). Any ideas? I'd love to see another version. MANY THANKS!

3/10.

Missing is the joy of Poe's prose, the frantic inner dialogue of the narrator.

I agree. For some reason, I went in assuming it would be like adaptations of The Raven: basically with the Poe writing serving as inner dialogue for the main character throughout. I was disappointed. Even more disappointed with the swelling music. It would have been better served with the music stopping dead so you can hear the heartbeat rather than making it a drumbeat increasing in volume.

Check out the 1971 version with Alex Cord as the murderer & Sam Jaffee as the old man.
