1.)I am guessing he hid the gun in case it was some kind of trap. If they frisked him for weapons, they would take it and he would be defenseless. Then he could either escape and run outside to grab his weapon, or if they intended to kidnap him, they would take him out the back and he could pretend to trip, grab the gun, and fight back.
1) As he explains to Deirdre, he doesn't walk into a place he doesn't know how to walk out of. He hid a gun near the back door of the cafe so in case things went bad and he had to shoot his way out he'd have a weapon.
2) It's a patriotic dig at Bean based on British nostalgia for the heyday of empire.
