I think he's just extremely in-experienced and trying to look like he knows it all. I.E. how proud of himself he is when he figures out smoke is bad for night vision.

Yes, very well played though to be fair to Mr Bean, I always thought of the character as simply someone with some limited military experience well out of his depth. And not knowing it.

yes at the time Bean was something of a go to guy for all action army officer types (Sharpe, Bond etc) so the audience would be expecting him to something similar in this.. but he comes out as a pathetic loser well out of his depth.

hes got some gun knowledge so its possible he had been in the military as a basic squaddie, but even that is in question due to his sheer ineptitude at the most basic of military tactics. so its possible he was just some loner gun nut from Yorkshire on the dole who read a lot of Guns & Ammo magazines and did abit of shooting on ranges etc and had lucked his way into this job (possibly through being in other crimes etc)
