I think it was just Robert de N. and his lack of knowledge of English town name pronunciations! And nobody had the courage to tell him it was wrong.

Its a point blank showing that he is an American. It would be more odd for an american to be spouting off perfect dialect of places he has never been. We have a "Hereford Road" here and every single person says "Her-furd" Road, no one here says "Air-a-furd" Road.
