Poor Dave... (SPOILER)

Firstly, did Scott (the kid who gets sucked into the anthill) need to be Dave's son? That makes Dave's already pointless death later on twice as cruel. He's already grieving, and after all of this effort to get there and save him from the barn, the dude who lost his son dies a sudden surprise death, and it's treated as an afterthought. Rather cruel.
