I'd like to see it too. I'm a big fan of disaster movies and read about this online, but can't find it. Anybody out there know where we can buy it?

Right now this movie is playing on FX Today: Friday November 4, 2005 on the Channel FX.
I live out in Oregon: On the Coast and it was on at 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
I looked it up and it is being repeated again tonight at 2:00 AM to 4:00 AM on the channel FX again.
Check your local listings for those intrested in taping it. I sure will.
Thanks

i just watched this movie last night. by far, the greatest film i've ever seen, in the worst way ever. i've never laughed so hard about how horrible a film can be. i need to find a list of horrible films so i can have some good comedy in my collection.

I'm ashamed and yet proud to say that early in my career I actually worked on the visual effects for this movie. At my old workplace, CBS Animation, we realized what real gold we had on our hands after noticing (in an early roughcut) some effects shots were actually being reused several times, even within the same sequence. (The flamethrower shots are the most reused, I think)

We toiled over roughly 200 shots for about 3 months during the summer of 1998, and I think it's apparent what kind of budget we had. We had high hopes for this movie's visual effects, but in the end had to do our best given the time constraints and limited crew of about 6 people.

According to the producer of the movie, the night it aired it actually "won the night" in ratings. After this unbelievable response, he expressed his feeling that we "needed to make a follow up movie", Marabunta 2. We all laughed, but maybe he was on to something, judging from the response on this site.

By the way, the movie was originally called "Marabunta" but was changed to "Legion of Fire: Killer Ants!" because of some apparent rights issue.
With a title like that, you just know you're in for a good time.

And believe it or not, I actually have a "crew baseball hat" from this movie. The tagline is "Marabunta: The picnic is over".

I'm glad our 1998 summer of has brought so much joy to so many. :)

wow thats awesome! When I was watching this movie, I got the feeling that during production, at some point everyone just gave up on making anything close to a serious film. When I watched it, it made me laugh harder than any perfectly executed spoof or parody film could.

So was there a point where you realised that this "horror" was going to be hilarious?

reply

That's awesome that someone from the film actually read this and responded. I agree, it seemed that they didn't even try for a serious film. Any chance you can get me a copy of the film? I would seriously LOVE to have a copy.

THANKS

Well, I think any good S/M shop would have this movie. Right on the top shelf, right next to whips. ;-)

I found it on ebay! It's under the title Marabunta. It's a buy it now item. From the Philipines, but they post worldwide. Including postage its US$11.30. It looks like the official VCD release, but I guess you could rip it and burn it to DVD. I just bought a copy :) So there are 2 more copies available.

Can't wait to get it.

Got it in the mail today! Took about 3 weeks, but it was worth it. the VCD quality isn't great. Sometimes these blocks of weird colour flash on the screen for a second, and the resolution isn't terrific. But in a way this kind of adds to the 'so bad its good' feel. I'd nearly forgotten how funny this movie was.

I really hope we see a DVD release. As someone else said, it's out in Germany, but I don't think its has an English language option on it (can anyone confirm this?). Maybe it would be even funnier hearing German people screaming "Die Killerameisen!". But I'm thinking about getting the video from the German DVD, and syncing it with the English audio from the VCD. Shouldn't be too hard if it hasn't been recut at all.
