...why did he leave? And why did Lucy let him go?
He had feelings for her but I don't think he was in love with her. She loved him but it wasn't reciprocated.

It's clear each loved the other: Emma asks Lucy if she loves Danny, and Lucy doesn't deny that she does and evades the question. When Emma asks Danny whether he and Lucy made love or if it was just a shag, he says he can't answer that, the implication being that it wasn't just another notch on the bedpost and he does in fact love her.
I like to think they met up again one day and maybe got together. I guess it wasn't the right time for them then. I really enjoyed their relationship in series 2 and the end was really touching.
Before these boards get completely shut down I just have to say I completely agree.
