minnie as mabel?

Who else thinks that someone had to be on something to cast minnie driver as mabel? I also thought her acting was kind of annoying and not how I pictured the character of Mabel to be. I respect Minnie, but I just dont think she was the best choice for this particular part.

I don't think Minnie Driver did a terrible job, but her acting in this is ... odd. She was definitely not the best choice for Mabel, but I suppose they could have picked worse.

I don't know much about the original play or the character she portrayed, but I thought she did a very poor job. Her "acting" seemed so forced. IMO, she is definitely the weakest link in this otherwise very good movie.

Yeah, have the same thought about it. umm not to talk bad, but Minnie's Mabel quite boring than spark as I thought it should be, whenever she met Lord Goring. well, Minnie got pictured it well, for her/Mabel' cynical and still have that sense of humor, but she seemed not really had the 'click' with Lord Goring's character, you know, something like a picture-perfect, whenever they're around.

I kind of think for Meg Ryan as Mabel then. hehe, just to my own sight about it.. .

"Your criticisms of the casting, and of Ms. Driver's acting in this movie, may all be valid."

emm I suppose to said that as an observation, never intend to be some criticism though..

"All I know is that by the end of the movie, I--another incorrigible bachelor--wanted to propose to her myself. So for me her performance was, on that level, effective."

well, I'll take it as the unique side of her, in this movie then....

I didn't really care for her either. I said on another message that she seemed bland to me...and I think that's a good description. She just didn't seem to be enjoying herself all that much. She seemed super, super uptight!!!

she did an odd acting job as Mabel - definately not the Mabel in the play. and she did not he fit the physical description, either. Minnie is just not that attractive (no offense or disrespect meant), and she is definately not an "english beauty." i pictured mabel more as a sweeter and kinder British Scarlett O'Hara.

I thought Minnie Driver almost ruined this delightful movie with her bug eyes and pouty mouth. She was more at home in a French bedroom farce. I would have liked to see Kate Beckinsale play this part.

Yeah, I think she was miscast. I haven't read the play or seen any other versions, so this one is the only one I know. My own impression is that most of what we are seeing throughout the movie is Minnie Driver interacting with Rupert Everet. In other words, she is more-or-less herself, speaking Mabel's lines, and having fun with Rupert, rather than an in-character Mabel, interacting with Lord Goring. I like Minnie Driver as a person - but I think her acting so far has a smaller casting ability. She is not as versatile as she could be. She is better suited to characters who are like her. That being said - this is a cute movie, and one I definitely enjoy.

Her performance definitely drew my disappointed reaction, initially. But I've grown to tolerate her after four or five viewings. She's slightly better in the second part of the movie, after being very amateurish in the first half.

The joining of Rupert Everett and Oscar Wilde is perfect though.

I just watched it now, and enjoyed it so much I'm going to watch it again.
