I Hate Victorian Romances

The characters are largely a bunch of stuck-up prissies.* I'm glad I didn't live in 1800s England or France. It would have been suffocating to deal with such a shallow & meaningless code where people marry for appearance, rather than true love. (And don't get me started on the sexual suppression of women.)

Have you read any works of non-fiction on the period, or are you basing your opinions on uneducated assumptions and superficial knowledge?

reply

Then why, electricroy, do you watch them (or at least this one) and take the time to express your general disdain for them on this board without any clear or specific reference to ths film?

The Victorian times were as good or as bad as any others...

Well, just to put things right:

1.) 1800's England doesn't belong to the Victorian Era (much less does France).
The Victorian Era (regency of the english queen Victoria) began in 1837 and ended in 1901.

2.) Oscar Wilde who indeed lived in the Victorian Era didn't write sentimental plays that glorify his times. He was a very controversial author and what he wrote is social satire.

What are people supposed to respond?
You don't like the genre? Um. OK then. *shrugs*

Moving on ;-)
