Harmless uncharming romp...

Considering all of the talent, I expected more. I love Cate Blanchett but I did not believe her character at all. Julliane Moore and Rupert were the exceptions who were deliciously entertaining.

Okay period romp but I have seen better.

6 out of 10.

Totally agree. Moore was good, but I couldn't handle the performances by most of the other actors. Driver was terrible. Possibly the worst acting performance I've seen. I only made it to the 40 minute mark before I had to turn the movie off.

Rupert was ghastly. He swallowed almost every line of dialogue, and those that survived were delivered in the dreariest fashion.

Nobody comes out of this very well.

reply

Well, that's the way the English upper class used to speak and still do.

at first it looked a bit fun, but i can't get hooked on movies in this setting, unless it's mel brooks history of the world, and i'm not sure who its suppose to appeal to. the servant in the opening scene looks like an ageing donald pleasence i thought. i didn't know it was a comedy until i saw it billed that way, somehow the plot didn't match that. seems the leading ladies are the sole reason this movie gets any vibe to it at all. i know it doesn't get bad reviews, guess just not my kind of flick then.

since i put my trust in you,
been in enough battles to see us true,
got me playing on your tune,
when suddenly you shifted track,
made me feel a fool for defending you in the past,
threw me in the mud and turned your back,
i gave you my gold for you to pull me out of the pit,
now we're together again in two broken bits,
playing a bitter tune staying stuck in your grip.

I quite agree. I think filmmakers are having a very difficult time converting Wilde's literature from text and play's to film. I say, until they figure out the right way to approach it, I think they should let it alone.

On the acting, I really have a problem when they repeat Wilde's lines word by word. It just doesn't sound right and it comes off very pretentious. It's hard to become deeply invested in a character if they are annoying... But I do think Everett was very good. I agree about how Blanchett was good yet her character wasn't. Moore was alright and so was Northam, who I felt grounded the sometimes absurd dialogue (that's right, I said it)
