well, welsh is not perfect

his books are great. trainspotting is the best thing i've ever read and ecstasy was also smart and funny but to make a movie with these stories... hum, bad idea. yeah, i watched the film with this voice in my head saying THIS IS NOT TRAINSPOTTING 2 but a second voice came to remind me each second how bad it was.
Is not funny, smart, well written and directed. a big mess, a *beep* nowhere. welsh tried to be surrealism but failed. with nick hornby, chuck pahlaniuk and bret ellis, he's one of the best writer of his generation. but let the adaptation of your books to professional screenwriter...

like we said in french, in my town... on est dans une vrai belle merde

reply

I totally agree with you
I don't think he will do something better after Trainspotting
and like we say in spanish ..."ya marchaste"

reply

your comments are a nonsense...Welsh does do surrealism beautifully. Read the books, don't watch the films. Irvine Welsh is an author, he didn't have anything to do withe the films Trainspotting or Acid House: he wrote the books that the films are based on.

And yes, he has done something better after Trainspotting - I recommend you read Glue, Filth and Porno. All excellent reads which, in my opinion are better than Trainspotting (with maybe exception of Filth).

He wrote the screenplay for Acid House.

And then, he adapted them to screen... he wrote the scripts in bouth

reply

John Hodge wrote the screenplay for Trainspotting

reply

What are you talking about? Filth was fantastic.

reply

ah huvnae gotten aroond tae readin glue, but Marabou Stork Nightmares is probably my favourite Welsh book.
Liked Porno a lot, but I'd rank it last in the Welsh books I read:

Marabou Stork Nightmares
Trainspotting
Filth
The Acid House
Porno

One humble man's opinion.
I hear glue's fantastic, but I hear Ecstacy's lacking. Still excited to read both of them (especially after getting a taste of Juice Terry in Porno)

i know it was you fredo.
you broke my heart.
you broke my heart.

reply

its an ok film but its not trainspotting that was an amazing film and help me get off drugs

reply

you're lying

Ma name's buck and I'm here ta *beep* !

reply

Glue is probably my favorite book by Welsh. I've read them all and enjoyed them all immensely. Can't wait for his next novel.

reply

All gret stuff, and it's real too Right!

Trainspotting was excellent, great screenplay, great acting, great direction.

I love these 3 stories cos they're real, at least, I can understand the "difficulty in being humane : humanity."

Welsh is real.

Roddy Doyle, only Scottish ,more intense, needmoconcentrtionfoanirishlad and more Scottish.

reply

yeah glues definately my fav too it brought me to tears tho in parts as all of his books do but this one really upset me
filth was also brilliant definately his sickest though!

reply

He did appear in a cameo in Trainspotting.

reply

Think about this as a book, it is a collection of short stories, which means that using these three shorts they are able for the first time i have ever seen to have a story from a book transfer onto screen while the script remains pretty much untouched.

Great sound track aswell.

reply

I agree. The Acid House was decidedly crap next to the brilliance of Trainspotting.

As for Welsh, Trainspotting was his stroke of genius but since then his down-and-dirty Edinburgh drug stories have got a bit tired. Not to say that they're entirely *beep* just a bit tired.

reply

Before I post anything I'd like to say that I haven't watched Acid House yet. So I don't know if it's a bad film or anything. But anyway, what I want to say is: Would you let go of Trainspotting?! Have you read his other books? Because almost all of them are great, including Acid House! Btw. my favourite story in it is the one where Madonna and her friends are talking about how they'd like to meet those Scottish guys...
I admit that Trainspotting is my favourite book, but Glue was in no way worse than Trainspotting. It's not that he writes the same stuff over and over again. He develops characters that you really get to like in the course of the book. And they grow older, just like himself. I don't think his stories get tired.

I haven't seen Acid House but i have read the book, years ago when i was going through this phase where i had to devour all of this authors works. i watched the movie for Trainspotting when i was about 14, and totally became obsessed with the whole of the authors universe so to speak.

i was so into the characters and stories that one of my odd habits popped up and my mom made me stop watching so much. see i have a habit of picking up accents and speech patterns, sometimes even mannerisms of people if i spend more then a couple minutes with them, and for a period of about 3 weeks my mom couldn't understand what i was saying.
finally after a few days she mentioned it to me when she noticed me lapsing into an accent very much like Ewan Mcgregors. (spelling?) she pointed it out and i realized why i had been getting funny looks from everybody at school and stuff. it took me about 2 weeks to completely stop though.
same thing happens if i spend a few days away from home, i will come home and will have picked up the speech patterns of whomever i stayed with, but this is the first time i had ever realized that i did this.

I'll kiss you on the brain in the shadow of the train...

I love all of his stuff :) especially the book Filth. Found myself laughing out load in a full train on several occasions.. how one person can think of so many awful things to do amazes me haha

by the way, first story of this movie is imo the best. Most awesome God of any movie I've seen :)

2nd is typical Welsh weak people getting screwed by bastards, he's mastered that one like no other

3rd: too bad about the fake looking baby, but the "body of christ" sequence made up for it

Just cause it's Welsh and he's my hero I gave it a 9 so there :P

reply

I think 'God' in this story is obviously supposed to be the devil. The emphasis on the lighter flame supports this.

Oh my God, I'd forgotten about this. That was hilarious!
