True, Hollywood's track record of making live action movies based on cartoons has been awful.

In 1988, Hanna-Barbera had a project of 10 made-for-TV cartoon movies called "Superstars 10", and one of the features was to have been "Around The World With The Wacky Racers." It got scrapped at the last minute.

Dennis Hopper is Dick Dastardly PERIOD!!!

reply

Death race 2000 isn't a wacky races movie!! The bad guy looks like Darth Vader!

reply

You want a wacky races movie, watch the pod race in "phamtom menace". That's the first thing I thought of the first time I saw that movie. I think one of the aliens even has a muttley-like laugh.

Wacky races was based on Blake Edwards "the great race"
http://imdb.com/title/tt0059243/combined

so there is a wacky races movie

reply

I think the Cannonball Run series is verry close.
But a special Wacky Racers movie would be great to.

reply

Even if they did do one, it would be badbecause they can never ge the ending on these types of movies right.

They'd be too scared to break the Hollywood style and wouldn't make it so there is there is a clear winner, but make it somehow that everybody "wins" (see Rat Race).

reply

Only should ever be done as a cartoon, i can't stand films based on cartoons where actors are trying to be cartoons, except in looney tunes where they pull it off well.

Ich Komme! Ich Komme! Ich Komme! Ich Komme! Ich Komme! Ich Komme! Ich Komme! Ich Komme!

reply

One day I hope they make a film, this was probably my favourite cartoon of all time.

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!

Good cast but who's Steve Carell?

reply

Steve Carell , the Daily show, The office, The 40 year old virgin. Ring a bell!

reply

No!

reply

Not with Spielberg attached, and I have doubts about Tim Burton. He would probably want Helena Bonham Carter to be Penelope Pitstop, and you know what? She could do it too. So that one may be good after all.

Paul Winchell's Dastradly is without a doubt some of the biggest shoes around to fill.

The cast would clearly have to have Dick Dastradly, Penelope Pitstop, Peter Perfect, Pat Pending, Luke, Rufus Roughcut and maybe Sarge and his sidekick.

Big Gruesome, Lil Gruesome, the Slag brothers, Red Max and maybe seven little men for the Anthill mob, could all be secondary characters, seen in the background.

We would also have to have a bear and a beaver. How on earth would they operate the beaver? Henson? CGI? A real beaver?

And of course, Muttley.

Now I think nothing better than Pete from the "Our Gang" shorts or Daisy from the Blondie movies would be suitable.

Heck, look at the late, great Eddie the dog from "Frasier".

No doubt, they could find a smoky grey dog and put the cap on him and get him to do the wonderful things Muttley is known for.

The Flintstones movie, I thought that little boy playing Bamm Bamm was possessed when he started making the cartoon grumbles that Bamm Bamm did. I wouldn't want to see any attempt at making a real dog laugh like Muttley.

I'll dismiss the surplus special's sidekick, you would need seven major players.

Could it be done today?

No. As others have noted, it would be done campy, toilet humor.

Expect Will Farrell to be Dick dastradly.

That sinks it right there.

Good Point! They might have some sex with Penelope Pitstop

reply

They might as well. They already have built all the cars. They show them off over at auto shows in Europe and you can see them driving them around on YouTube

Jim Carrey or Robert Downy Jr. as Dick Dastardly

Jude Law as Peter Perfect

I'd save Steve Carrel for the role of Sylvester Sneekly/ The Hooded Claw from the Perils of Penelope Pitstop

reply

it was made; Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
