Similiar cartoons

Can somebody recommend me some similiar animations like this in terms of style, period etc.

I have seen a anime movie that is similiar to this long time ago don't remember the name of it, just remember the ending scene when a giant is running after a boy and then the giant falls down the cliff and dies. Anybody know the film im referring?

I suspect the above answer must be the one you're looking for. I mean, it actually looks like it is by the same people as far as I can tell (many of the same visual effects, animation style.)

But you asked for a recommendation and for that I'd say there's nothing wrong with trying something a bit newer--like *ahem* the Avatar series off Nickelodeon. It's 60 episodes, one continuous plot (and rather serious plot) that deals with nothing less than spirituality, nationalism and reincarnation.

I think a lot of people who grew up on animation back from the 80's (and even earlier!) may assume modern animated shows are just going to be dumbed down, and like me, are turned off by the marketing. I hope Avatar isn't the exception, but even if it is, its still an incredible find and I think people who enjoy MCoG would enjoy this series too.

You definitely should check out Ulysses 31. It was made by the same people, even some of the voice cast are the same. It's basically the Odyssey in space.

Ulysees 31 was awesome!! I highly recommend it.

I've started watching a series called Full Metal Alchemist: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421357/combined. It's an anime about two brothers on a sort of quest. There is a mystical element to it and after viewing four episodes, I will definitely continue watching the series.

Yeah, Ulysses 31 has some great episodes. It also works because each episode was self-contained whereas MCOG can make no sense at all if you just dip in randomly.

I'm pretty sure the same group made an animated version of Belle and Sebastian in the 80s too, but I can't remember if that was any good or not.

^This, what paolovf said! Ulysses 31 was an excellent series i'd also highly recommend it to anybody young or old!

I'll also vouch for Full Metal Alchemist as well. In the first original animated series and the later "Brotherhood" second anime series (which was more faithful to the original manga series).

The other recommendations are really exciting, can't wait to check them out! (except B&S, already re-watching that one ).

I really liked the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon as a kid. Movies that I held the same respect for as MCoG were: The Sea Prince and the Fire Child; and Warriors of the Wind (has a new title now).

The Avatar cartoon was comparable, and really good; a similar cartoon that came out at the same time but didn't do as well, was called Skyland. It had initially annoying computery-type animation, but it grows on you and the story is pretty good. Only lasted one season.

And Cowboy Bebop will always be my number one anime. It's more adult, but still amazing. Another series by the same creator that was also pretty good was Samurai Champloo.

As far as the overall depth and style of MCoG though, I've never seen anything that equals it. :)

'Ulysses 31' was great and still remains a good show when watched as an adult. I also loved 'Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors' although I've not seen it since I was a child. 'COPS' was also a good show from the early 90s. Why do they not make good animated shows these days?
