Stupidest Ending

When I first saw this movie in the video rental store, the box looked creepy and the plot seemed interesting. When I was first watching it, it seemed to have potential. But not only was it incredibly boring, what the f^ck was up with that ending? Suddenly, it goes from "documentary" to fiction, which made no sense and was just lame. Although BW seems to have blantantly ripped this off and I didn't really like that movie either, the ending to BW was very very good. It was much more ambiguous and made you wonder. Where the fun in just telling you that there's no jersey devil and it's just this psychotic documentary director? It's really maddening when you see amatuers take a seemingly good idea and just completely ruin it. Anyone feel the same way? Disagree?

reply

i totally agree with you... except on the blair witch part (i loved that movie from the beginning till the end :))

i watched it last night, after having it for like 3 months or so... I wanted to wait for the right moment, 'caus this movie sounded really great.. and judging by the cover it also looked great

I watched it with great enthousiasm, but I got really bloody bored after a while ...and it got worse...
there was one moment in the movie which made me say "ah cool.. maybe this does turn out to be a good movie" and that was they showed the shot of Locus and Rein running away from something
buttttt... after that I went into the same bored state as before

and then we got to the ending... OMFG! how *beep* stupid was that :| everything changed... even the way they filmed the whole thing..
This movie turned out to be one of my least favorite movies of all time

It had absolutely great potential... but it turned into a fcking catastrophy

thnx Stefan Avalos and Lance Weiler for making me spend about 11 euro's on a piece of crap

can someone explain the ending like after he opens the door that just confused the absolute *beep* out of me

"they're break dance fighting!"

reply

the ending showed us (to my dismay) that this filmmaker was the killer all along and that he had set these kids up so he could make his own lame documentary about the killings. at the end he kills the lady restoring the film when she sees his face on a piece of the film and realizes he was the killer. it was quite possibly the worst ending ive seen in years. and as it has been said, it is especially unfortunate since this concept had great potential and i liked the acting from the fact or fiction hosts a lot. i just hated all that crap about the media and how this stupid guy was trying to make a statement. too bad, so sad.

reply

god this was terrible. i had never even heard of this movie before just watching it, so i wasn't sure what to make of it. but the ending was just patently absurd. you got the feeling they got to the ending and were like, "crap, how do we end this thing?"

and maybe i missed it, but can someone explain why the video restoration girl had plastic all over her house when the director guy got there? did i miss something?

reply

People who work exclusively with older/damaged film need really clean environments, so she probably had the plastic so that dust doesn't get onto the film. So when she walks, she doesn't kick up carpet dust, and dust doesn't cling to plastic like it does wood. But I didn't mind the ending. It was decent.

reply

Although, why did the filmmaker keep repeating those lines at the end?

I was wondering the same damn thing. I was thinking maybe he was trying to have footage at every possible time the cops could have found her so he would have evidence he was somewhere else, but that doesn't make sense b/c he had her body. Maybe he was recording over the tape where he killed her to destroy the evidence? Why would he even have the camera on when he went up to kill her? I don't get that at all. Can anyone else shed light on this? ANY ideas?

I find this board shallow and pedantic.
(Family Guy reference! :)

reply

It seemed like he was trying to record a self-intro.
Every time he states his name and begins to talk, he makes a face like he's frustrated, like "oh snap I messed up, again."

I totally agree! I just finished watching this movie on IFC and was soooo disappointed. I had to come on here to find out what the hell happened. I lost interest in the beginning, middle and end. But, I wanted to give it a total viewing. Sometimes you miss things that can change your opinion in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, this didnt. I hated it. BTW, Im not pissing in anyone's sandbox, its just MY opinion.

"oooooh....someone needs a RAID enema to kill that bug up their ass!"

reply

I also agree with the ending of this film being retarded. It sucks cause I wanted to like this movie, I was watching it on IFC, I thought it was well crafted in fitting the stlye of the film. I was completly intriuged from start to finish, I thought the use of non-linear story telling was very refreshing and original, and part of me was pissed I didn't think of this film. Then of course there is the last 5minutes. I can honestly say, this is the worst ending to a good movie I have ever seen. I am a filmmaker and am almost to the point I would like to remake this film, simply to have it end differently.

I was totally bored with this movie after 15 minutes. And the end just made me more angry. Who the hell was filming the filmmaker/killer if we were to see this whole thing from his eye, his camera, his perspective. Suddenly it turns into a film instead of a mock documentry. I wanted to tell the clerk at the video store to take this off the shelves, because it was so bad. But I remember working in a video store and having to deal with these type of customers and how much I hated hearing them talk period.

Maybe in your next life, you'll believe the Zodiac when it tells you to cut the red wire.

reply

I too, jsut finished watching it on IEC. I thought it was ok...Until the end.

The ending made me go, wtf???

Also, was this a real documentry, or was it completly fiction?

I also caught the last half hour on IFC. Creeped the crap outta me until that last scene. Still seemed like a decent enough movie. Although, why did the filmmaker keep repeating those lines at the end?

reply

So shoot me: I liked the ending. Steve.

reply

Though I really did enjoy the movie, I agree that the ending could have been pulled off with a bit more tact. The sudden switch from "documentary mode" to "dramatic camera angles mode" was kind of disorienting. If I hadn't known it was fiction to begin with, it probably would have pissed me off, too. Still, the ending in no way ruined the movie for me.

reply

The ending absolutely terrified me.

I agree. I liked the ending all right, but it switched from fake documentary to an orthodox movie. It would have been more interesting if it was apparent that he was working with an unseen camera man to add some mystery, or the movie could have just stayed on one shot (when he drops it before attacking the film expert, it could have easily laid there, filming her demise).

reply

I just finished watching the last half hour on IFC. My husband had been watching the whole thing and he was enjoying it until I said something about a crappy movie being made about the "real" story. I didn't realize that this was the movie I had heard of. He did a little research online and found out this was the movie. Then the ending happened and we were both so disappointed. As everyone else said, it's too bad he changed his style. If he would have just left it documentary style then the ending could have been great.

As far as why he would show himself at the end killing the girl, I thought he was trying to prove that science and the law could put an innocent man in jail. And why he kept repeating those lines at the end, I think that was just showing that he was trying to get the line "right".

Just a horrible ending which is too bad because he had a good concept but just couldn't see it through.

reply

Although, why did the filmmaker keep repeating those lines at the end?

It was part of the script would be my guess.

It's a good thing!-Martha Stewart

reply

Agreed. I couldn't figure out why he sent the incriminating film to Michelle in the first place. Did he want to share his secret?

reply

I agree it was a terrible ending.

For my money, it doesn't get any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".

I think I really enjoyed this movie until the end. That ending was possibly the worst thing they could have saddled that film with. And it had such potential, too.

It seems as though i'm the only one who liked this film and its ending. I thought the ending was done really well, it took me by supprise thats for sure. I can't think of any better ways it could of been done. It was a bit far fetched i know but i wouldn't change it for all the $900 it was shot for.

reply

I liked the ending. I thought it was a commentary on documentary filmmakers who interfere with their subjects too much and alter reality on order to make a more entertaining film.

reply

warning may spoil the film if you have never seen it.

For all you people that dont like this film / ending you clearly dont understand the plotline in the sligthest. the ending was amazing and made an important observation on the media being like vampires, and in this case doing the killing and selling it, which in some cases happens in real life esspecialy in the war that is currently happening in iraq. Oh and by the way this film came out before the blair witch project it actuly inspired the blair witch writers that made a bad job of the inspirational aspects. another thing about the last broadcast is the fact that it isnt supposed to be a horror movie its a doccumentry.

another thing is the fact that it leaves the plot open (if you had listened to the buildup of the film ,) the fact that the killer was ambidexterous and no metalic fragments were found on the body which suggests this killer / person could actuly be the jersy devil in duscise (ie ambidexterous like a natural predator / lions and assuch)

i so wish people would think before speaking and didnt go for brand lables over genuinly good storylines like media dictated lemmings to the slaughter.

ps i dont care about my poor grammar / spelling

reply

Why did you post this once again? This movie's not worth getting that excited over.

reply

I (for some reason) keep reading where these people say this inspired BW, but if you know anything about BW, other than having just watched it......hell, brainfart, just do a quick lookup of BW on wiki or something and you'll see the concept of BW was thought up circa '93.

I found the film fairly creepy, although not scary. It took a while to build upand there wasn't that much on the devil itself. The ending however I did think was a let down, and didn't make much sense. Why did he give the woman the footage to restore if he knew she would find his image on it?

The change of styles didn't really bother me though, as the scene couldn't relly have happened any other way. After all, he couldn't hold the camera whilst suffocating her then dumping the body could he?

reply

I wasn't confused about the reason he gave her the tape. It was about Jim taking "credit" for David's work. The missing footage was actual proof, not fictionalised by the media, and had to be sourced by someone who's only motive was finding the actual killer.

Nonetheless, I was very let down by the ending. The face becoming clearer worked well, only to be let down by a "third person" filming the murder of the film restorer. Perhaps it was that creepy soapy director? I kind of wish it had been.

I'm not opposed to the idea of the documentarian being the killer, but the execution of it was very weak. Everything before was obviously made cheaply, but this actually made it seem real. When a more traditional horror scene pops up at the end, still looking rather cheap, everything falls flat.

This is a good movie until that point. For me it's worth taking two points off the overall score, and only giving it 5.

Next day....

I went back to giving it a 7. Still disappointed with the way the ending was shot but have to give it points for getting under my skin. Went to bed, and it was all I could think about. Knowing the ending, I think it might be worth a second viewing.

reply

Yes, awful, awful ending.

Unlike many others, I was gripped by the mystery from start to (almost) finish. It felt very ominous, I loved the sense of ambiguity, the fact that it touched on real life themes of conspiracy murders linked with a possible supernatural entity. It really scared me in places and got under my skin. The images were brilliant, like the demon faces in static, and the ghost noises caught on tape. Really gave me the creeps, and it felt like I was watching a genuine documentary about a myth.

At times, I even thought it was superior to Blair Witch, but it seems like the makers of that film saw this, realised how bad the ending was by letting go of all ambiguity, and making the ending about 10 times better, by INCLUDING ambiguity which, in either case, is still disturbing.

I just finished watching it, and I am VERY disappointed with how it ended, and by providing definitive closure, which barely made any sense!

What could have been a great film that was left open to interpretation makes it a watch once only. They say the thing you remember the most about a film is how it ends, and if a good film has a bad ending, your left with the feeling that you've seen a bad film (a bit like The Last Exorcism).

That logic most definitely applies here.

Blair Witch may have it's faults and lack of logic, but definitely makes up for it with an ending that stays with you long after the credits roll (even though the characters seem to have cameras glued onto their shoulders throughout it's duration are very stupid to not carry mobile phones).

TERRIBLE ending!
This film was actually quite good until this bizarre (and to me, inexplicable) ending.
If the filmmaker was the killer, WHY DID HE SEND THE VIDEO TO THE GIRL TO BE RE-CONSTRUCTED THEN?!
He couldn't have wanted to be caught, or he would not have killed the girl!

Why did he kill the men anyway?! Just to make a movie?

I had barely heard of this film, and now I know why. I absolutely LOVE The Blair Witch Project. The entire found-footage genre is one of my favorite film styles nowadays!

But this one's ending stunk.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

reply

I agree. It went from documentary and found footage to they psycho being filmed by someone that isn't supposed to be there.

reply

This is a film that was made by pretty unskilled hands. None of it is very well done, but I think the basic concept that they started out with, of a documentary about a murder case where the murderer turns out to be the film maker, was very clever. The ending was clumsy indeed, but in my estimation it was the execution, not the concept that failed. I give them credit for making a good effort with limited experience and a fine idea.

reply

One of the worst endings in any movie ever made. None of these buffoons ended up doing much after, and I think we can see why.
