Question to everyone who liked it

I keep reading about how people found this scary and "extremely frightening," and "better than The Blair Witch," so now I'm wondering if maybe I watched the wrong movie or a different version or something.

The movie I watched was, like, 85% boring interviews, and just about 15% of "found footage" that was never scary. The only scene that maybe a kid could find scary is the one where they find blood, but it's a quick scene that then gets interrupted by even more interviews. And really, all you see is some blood on the ground.

So tell me, did I actually watch the wrong thing?

I didn't find the film particularly "scary," especially by today's standards, but I found the film to be very entertaining.

It's something that without big budgets and the pizazz of a big Hollywood picture, a film with simple storytelling and narration could keep me hooked. I particularly enjoyed the character of Locus Wheeler, and found the rest of the group to be quite entertaining in their own way as well.

I think the fact that you mention, "boring interviews," is what actually ended up adding to the film for me. It was just simple storytelling in the form of a documentary, with what was supposed to end with a "shocking" ending (though, like others, this didn't have much of an effect on me—going into third person camera angles).

I think if they would have gone the full "found footage" route, like BLAIR WITCH did, it may or may not have had the same effect as BLAIR. The thing is, these characters were fun (whereas the BLAIR characters were not), and the film still would've been more entertaining than it would've been scary.

Perhaps you could've documented Suerd's downfall in the midst of them broadcasting/simulcasting/cablecasting "Fact or Fiction," but how would you have find out who the killer really was at the end? If they did write Suerd as the killer, it would have been the expected ending, and David Leigh wouldn't have been in the film at all if they didn't go the documentary route.

Oh, I don't mind the whole interviews thing, but I do think there should be a limit. Take "The Fourth Kind" for example, if you've seen it. They do have these supposedly real interviews that they then recreate, but they don't dominate most of the film like in this one.

Or also "The Tunnels." It also features some interviews, but there's a lot of action and scary stuff in the found footage.

The reason I found the interviews boring was because there were just so many of them. There's more action in a "Criminal Minds" episode than in this movie, and those are supposed to be more documentary-like.

The thing I don't understand, though, is how some people can find this film scary or better than "The Blair Witch." I personally love "The Blair Witch" and all found footage movies, but this one could've been much, much better with a little more found footage, in my opinion.

I'm watching it now and I agree completely.

I was so stoked for this... what a bunch of nothing

Today's standards are pretty ordinary in the scary department. I think horror is losing it's way as far as genuine terror is concerned....

It's interesting that you found the characters in this movie fun and those in TBWP otherwise. One of my complaints about this film was that the characters seemed dull and flat, and I thought one of TBWP's strengths was how well drawn the characters were. Just goes to show that there's a big degree of subjectivity in these things.

They come across as dull and flat because most of their story is told through the eyes of others. Blair Witch has a huge advantage over Last Broadcast because the story is told through the eyes of the victims, making their predicaments more immediate and relatable.

I think this film was just OK. Not excellent, not horrible. That being said, I don't think anyone would know about this film if it weren't for The Blair Witch Project. Many people seem to dislike The Blair Witch Project and find it overrated, so they mention this film's title every chance they get just to have a reason to call The Blair Witch Project a ripoff of something.

Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.

People have different tastes and can find different things scary. I grew up watching old reruns of In Search Of and Unexplained Mysteries so this movie really made me feel like I was watching those old shows. They creeped me out without ever really showing anything scary, and this movie does the same for me. Just the idea that something killed these guys, and they never really know WHAT. That's terrifying. And then the plot twist ending? Pretty great, jarring, and makes you go "what the hell!? OH MY GOD!" It's just awesome.
