The AIP print (Voyage to the End of the Universe) is available on dvd in America, but I don't know if the company seeling it ships outside the States. They're a small company, named BijouFlix. As far as I know of the restored Czechoslovakian original edit has not yet been released in any region. (I would hope it was released in it's country of origin, at least. Maybe someone will correct me and tell us how to obtain it??)

The AIP print is English dubbed, pan & scan, and has a slightly altered final shot, but as far as I can tell it is the full length film. There seems to be a slight discrepency in the running times that have been reported for the movie.

Also, it's in black and white - the notion that it was ever in color seems to have sprung from the lobby cards having been colorized.

I will have the original film on DVD-R soon [copied directly from the official Czech PAL video edition, so the quality will be very good - so far, I have the video on MPEG-2 w/ MP3 audio]. It is aslo in widescreen [cca. 1:2.35].

Not only does the ending of the original film differ [= much better], but there are scenes not to be found in the altered American version [particularly at the departure of Ikarie, e.g., when it is shown that the spaceship leaves our Solar System].

Ikarie XB1 aslo available at a Czech video distributor in Canada [on DVD-R, and reportedly in good quality]: http://www.videoelcanada.com/ [interestingly, I can not get the menu section with Firefox, only with IE. You should click on "I" in the catalogue menue to get the section containing Ikarie on .pdf file].

Has anyone any news yet on how to get this special edition delivered to the US?

reply

I sent for this from the Czech site, the movie was great. The disc was region-free, but the video format is PAL, so if you get this disc, and you're in North America, make sure you have a PAL to NTSC converter. I ordered it straight from the Czech site and they had it to my door a week later (certified mail).

reply

Thanks, that's great news! Forgive me being slow, but which Czech site? I looked at the Filmpub site mentioned above, but can't find any instructions on ordering (or read Czech, I'm afraid).

Also, what price? I just saw a review that puts it at about a hundred dollars?

reply

the URL of the czech website is http://www.dvdr.cz/index.php?lang=en&shop=vi the website has english or czech language options. When I bought the dvd I just charged it to my credit card. The price was listed in czech krona, but depending on the the exchange rate it works out to be $25-$30 US.

reply

Thank you for the info! It has arrived (good service all around from that site), and the restoration on the film is excellent. Beautiful to behold.

reply

If someone in the US needs a copy, I can send it. I have both the AIP and the new czech version in PAL.

The original Czech version (region 0, PAL DVD) is also available from Xploited video for $29.95: http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/ikarie-xb-1-p-7362.html

The Czech DVD is amazing, enjoying it right now and came here looking for info on the film. The space suit design is superior to even Kubrick's, what a great movie!

reply

Could you tell me the length of the movie you got? I have the cut up one of 75 minutes...has it been restored? Thanks.

reply

83 minutes PAL 25fps, which would be about 87 minutes at NTSC 24fps -- ten minutes longer than the English dubbed abomination.

reply

With a dvd, it's 83 minutes, whether it's PAL or NTSC. A dvd player capable of playing both PAL/Ntsc should convert the fps without effecting the runtime (my Ntsc player and computer both say the PAL dvd runs 82:48 min). Kind of like the joke about which weighs more - a ton of feathers or ton of bricks.
In the UK, they're known for TV broadcasting (which is a different process than dvds) USA films(24 fps) at the PAL standard of 25 fps, so they're slightly speeded up and have a shorter runtime.

reply

All movies in PAL regions are speed up for 4% (24 to 25 fps) whether are for TV broadcast, VHS, LD, DVD, BluRay,....
