Influence on 'SUNSHINE'

Before watching Ikarie XB1 I read about its influence on Kubrick's 2001, which I certainly noticed while watching the film. What I noticed even more so though was the influence this film obviously had on Danny Oboyle's Sunshine. First and foremost is the similarity in ship names, Ikarie being another spelling of Icarus, the name of the ship in Sunshine (and referring to the Greek mythological figure who flew too close to the sun with wings made of wax and feathers, and who, consequently, fell into the ocean and drowned).

Secondly both films contain a scene where the astronauts unexpectedly encounter a previous spaceship from Earth, and send some of the astronauts out to explore it, and in both cases, the found ships are destroyed.

Lastly, each film contains an antagonist who is an astronaut that has gone crazy. In both cases the said antagonists are loose on the Icarus/Ikarie ships, terrorizing the rest of the crew.

Both of these movies are awesome. If you have seen either one and liked it, I highly recommend the other.
