Why this movie is not well known in Romania?

So it's made in 1997 now we're in 2006, there has been 9 years that passed, I'm a true film fan but only now I reached to watch this. I found it very interesting and very realistic, I'm telling you cause I've seen those kind of gypsies and they are very well portrayed.

Myabe this sounds like a dumb remark from a Dutch guy, but I was amazed about the temperamental character of the gypsies. I mean the constant shouting, cursing, loud debating and the like. But it seemed quite natural to me.

PS: Anyone else thought the character Sabina looked a lot like actress Rachel Weisz?

my classmate is a gypsy and he is just like the characters from the movie.he is loud and full of energy and always gets himself in trouble.to be more precise there is a market in our town where gypsies sell clothes and other stuff...man oooh man they are loud!and good businesman and if you get to negotiate with a gypsy well..you can be certain that you are going to be the one who looses...oh and by the way:THIS MOVIE IS THE BEST.

...it's worth remembering we all come from gypsies because they travelled from Africa originally...

Huh ?
Where in god's name did you learn your history, young man ?

Gypsies originate from India, not Africa.
And while people are originally considered to have come from Africa, that was a bloody loooong time ago - tens of thousands of years, too long to keep a culture.

Jeezus, what are they teaching kids in schools in the west these days ?

Wait a minute, don't get THAT sanctimonious, RDMoreland is not completely wrong. Yes, the gypsies originated in India, but a lot of them entered Europe via North Africa where they were settled for a long time, starting with Egypt (hence the name "Gypsy", that comes from "Egyptian", same for "gitan") and all the way to Morocco. So technically, yes, many of them came from Africa.

India.. my friend not Africa. They started from India after the Aryan invasion. They came mainly from the regions where the states of Rajasthan and Punjab exist today. Even Gatlif showed this in his film Latcho Drom (1993).
"They don't invade Poland or Iraq though do they ?" loved that part.

reply

Well i dont' think that's quite accurate, i'm from romania and most of my friends have seen it or at least have heard about it. Of course it won't compare in popularity with the crappy blockbuster movies out there, but why would you want that?.

Besides, most romanians are too blinded by rasism and prejudice against gypsies to fully apreciate this unique and beautiful film.

reply

Ya, now that you mentioned I think Rona Hartner looks a bit like Rachel Weisz.

As for why I would want this film to be more popular in Romania is because the action of the film takes place in some romanian village and I think it would be only natural to be more well-known here (i'm romanian too). I've heard of it few years ago but only now I've come to see it.

reply

This is a great NON-SUPERFICIAL movie. Most of these movies are unknown to the masses. I'm sure if you ask the ordinary romanian bloke if he's ever seen Rambo, he'll say YES.
Well, i'm romanian and i can tell you who wants to know these kinds of movies does. The rest are just ignorant. They prefer shallow american big-budget blockbusters to sincere, low-budget european stuff.

If you can't get enough of the gypsies, be sure to read GYPSIES by Jan Yoors. It's EXCELLENT and in the book it is like you get to live with them a bit. ;)

Well, the Romanians sound like the Americans: those who want to be aware are aware; those who don't just watch Blockbuster movies and television and eat their processed foods and take their anti-depression pills and lead lives that are so suffocating I just can't talk about it anymore!

Criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, friend, acquaintance or stranger.

Hello oana,
what you have told sounds very funny,i never thought at this point of view, but (we) romanians are watching more movies from outside, cheap movies like american comedies and usually new movies
i ask myself why there arent so many romanians who saw "filantropica",which is a masterpiece.
