What does 'Gadjo Dilo' mean?

I know that "Gadjo" is the term gypsies use to refer to non-gypsies. But what is "dilo" and is it pronounced as in dill'-oh?

Criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, friend, acquaintance or stranger.

Ah. I found out that dilo means crazy. Gadjo is translated very loosely to mean stranger, because there really is no English word for what gadjo means.

Still wondering how to pronounce it though!

Gadjo Dilo = the translated title:Etranger fou or Crazy Stranger!
Easy,isn't..

They actually talk Romani & Romanian in the movie,Romani being the language of the
gypsies self. They're tolerated in most countries, even Romania itself..

It is easy to pronounce. I will use capital letters for the stress:

gah-jO dee-lO

gadjo = non-Roma male; stranger

dilo = crazy

Sometimes "gadjo" is spelled "gadzo". However you want to do it, we should get the 'j' sound.

i am curious will roma people call a non-white person (e.g. a black person or an east asian) gadjo/gadzo as well??

reply

Yes. Gadjo refers no anyone who is not Roma. It is an ethnic distinction, not a racial one.

It means...more or less..."crazy non gypsy" ..so thats why the English title is "Crazy Stranger" since thats...the best translation of it ^_^
