So when he was shot was he killed and became a "zombie"..? or was he just injured by the gun shot then buried alive in the pit, just biding his time until his daughter arrived to release him..?

Well it's never really clearly defined how Dr. Ramzi becomes a zombie himself, or why any of the zombies come back to life. Besides the reference to the earthquake opening the basement's seal, you have to stretch your imagination a bit!
