Is Star Wars Reboot related to this election?

Throughout human history politics and culture have been mirrored by art.

Egyption art is geometric and rigid. The society was rigid and remained solid like the buildings for thousands of years.

Greek and Roman and art was varied free flowing and slighty pornographic. Society was democratic and free, full of new ideas. But also decadent and ultimately collapsed.

In the Dark ages both Art and society regressed in Europe.

At the renaissance Art and Culture bloomed again in Italy. Michealagelo Revived Art, Galileo Revived Science, Leonardo did both.

Art and culture continued to spread until the 20th century.

In the 21st century Art has entirely collapsed and the most commercially popular pieces of the cinematic art are basically outright rip-offs. Not just Star Wars, Avengers, DC, Lord of The Rings, etc. Music and television are getting awfully repetitive.

Meanwhile politicians argue about Racism and Sexism. Britain is alone against a federalized Europe, and Russian Troops fight facists in Eastern Ukraine.

Both politics and art are copying from the last century and not creating any new ideas.

(South Park didn't say this, but they are right to point out the link)

Not at all. New Star Wars and other reboots are just companies trying to turn nostalgia into profit by targeting a growing demographic of consumers.

It's still Art. Essentially the Vatican was just a company trying to turn unjustified nostalgia about a crappy story into profit. So they hired Michealangelo to paint the ceiling.

If they'd hired JJ Abrams, he'd have re-written the Bible with the character and place names changed.

reply

Doesn't change my point on Star Wars or reboots. In a larger scoop Art is reflective of the individuals who create it, who are influenced by the society and culture they have grown around.

The flood of comic book movies has to do with technology being able to do them justice now, mixed with 50 years of already written story lines ready to go that a majority of consumers don't know.

I actually disagree with your premise of art collapsing anyway. It's easy to look back with admiration because you only remember the hits, In the present you see everything so it seems like the quality is worse. It's like comparing a greatest hits album to a new release,

Yeah, movies and music today is just like the 60's and pre-disco 70's, NOT!

As for music, back then the economics was album sales with a tour being a necessary evil to support that. Remember when front row concert seats were $10, the same as the back row. Artists like Dylan, Paul Simon, Carole King etc spent time writing and recording 9 months of the year and touring for 3; now it is the opposite. I'm think Springsteen may be the last of the big artists to have a full repertory of albums across a career.

The economics has changed for established artists, but ease of access has also allowed them to reach more people, Also more different and niche music is available because of the same thing.

In the 16 years since 2000 every year's top movies have been from a continuing franchise. (Either Movie, Book, Comic) Except 2: Frozen and Avatar.

In the 16 years before that only 4 were continuing: Terminator2 Star Wars 1, Indy 3 and Die hard 3. 12 were original.

I wouldn't use highest grossing movie in a given year as a gauge for how artistic people are, would actually be a better gauge of the publics appetite for original content. I will say big budget movies are played as safe as possible because of the dollars on the line, and they represent most of big studios profits so there is a lot of focus in the area. I have a hard time believing less original movies are being made, simply due to the amount of movies that are released these days. I do agree that they aren't as highly touted or polished as they were when they were more profitable though.

reply

Haha.

I actually wonder whether there is much cross-over between Star Wars fans like myself (who welcomed The Force Awakens, and don't find it lacking at all but a legitimate continuation) and Trump / Mr. Garrison supporters who seem to be lacking in empathy, compassion, and common sense. The Star Wars movies (from the Original Trilogy onward in episode numbers) are celebrating a more liberal and adaptive view of the world.

If someone wakes up each morning thinking, "How can I stop the gay folks from getting married today?" that's a pretty sad set of priorities. If they are determined to see Planned Parenthood destroyed, they should look at Elizabeth Warren's explanation of it. Here's a link.

In Star Wars, the arbitrary nature of prejudice is illustrated by the droids not being allowed in the cantina, "We don't serve their kind here."

Gotta bite the bullet and accept that there is a huge population problem. Hopefully not a literal bullet, because gun control needs to be an issue too.

Funny how the mocked the 2012 election while also mocking Disney buying Star Wars. Mickey Mouse is a dick.
